Md - The #1 ranked Sea Gulls broke a 7-7 halftime tie by outscoring Washington
6-4 in the second half en route to a 13-11 victory in the national semifinal
round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday. Salisbury (19-0) earns its seventh trip to
the national championship game and will try to secure its second straight and
fifth overall title against Nazareth in next Sunday’s final in Baltimore.
Washington finishes the season with an 18-3 record, with two of its three losses
coming against Salisbury.
Salisbury
opened the second half with three consecutive goals, as Andy Arnold
(2g-3a) scored twice and assisted on the other goal by midfielder Jimmy
Creighton (2-1). The Sea Gulls outscored Washington 4-2 in the pivotal third
quarter and never trailed after gaining the second half lead.
Jon
Spivey added
his third and fourth goals of the game for Washington, sandwiched around a goal
from SU’s Mike Edwards, to make the score 11-9 after three quarters.
Washington would get no closer than two goals during the fourth quarter.
Four
players finished with two goals each for the Sea Gulls, who tied a school-record
with their 19th victory of the season. Midfielder Scott Simmons,
attackman Corey O’Neil, Arnold and Creighton each finished with two
markers. Junior midfielder Justin Smith added three assists.
Spivey’s four goals led Washington. Stephen Berger
added two goals and three assists for the Shoremen.
Salisbury finished with a small edge, 37-34, in total shots. SU goalie Dan
Korpon and WC goalie Richard Yost finished with 11 saves each.
Salisbury
and Nazareth will be meeting in the championship game for the second time.
Salisbury defeated Nazareth 22-13 in the 1995 title game. The overall series is
tied 3-3.
