Season Wrapup: Salisbury Finishes Season Ranked No.14
December 8, 2005

NSCAA DIVISION III FINAL RANKINGS
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men’s soccer team finished the year ranked No.14 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Sea Gulls enjoyed another solid campaign in 2005, reaching the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in seven season. The team endured an up-and-down year, culminating in a disappointing finish to an otherwise successful 17-3-1 campaign.

Messiah College, which captured the national title and finished the year unbeaten at 24-0, claimed the top spot, followed by Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at No.2 with an 18-3-3 record. Whitworth College (Wash.) finished No.3 with a 19-2-1 mark, Plattsburgh State University (N.Y.) finished in the fourth spot with a 22-2 record and Trinity University (Texas) rounded out the top five with a 19-2-1 record. CAC opponent York College (18-2-3) finished the year ranked No.10.

Offensively, Salisbury was led by standout senior captain Bill Whittington, who scored 14 goals and recorded six assists for 34 points. For his performance, Whittington was named CAC Player of the Year and was named to the first team. He was also honored by being named to the NSCAA / adidas Division III All-American Second Team and the NSCAA All-South Region First Team.

Whittington was joined by senior back Tim Lane, senior back Dan Thrailkill and senor goalkeeper Jason Cranford on the All-CAC First Team. Senor Chris Mills finished second on the team in scoring with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Reid Klopp was third with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Thrailkill, Lane and Mills were also Second Team All-South Region performers.

In goal, Salisbury was hurt by the injuries in the early portion of the season. The team lost Cranford after the second game of the season to a broken hand. He missed the next 10 games, and the team relied on the goalkeepers Scott McGuire and Matt Blue in goal. McGuire started three games, winning all three and stopped all seven shots on goal. Blue started seven games with a record of 6-0-1, with four shutouts. On the season, Cranford was 8-3-0 with a .818 save percentage and a 0.82 goals against average.

In the regular season, Salisbury lost only one game - to conference opponent Marymount - in sixteen games. The team also shut out the opposition in their first eight games, including a 0-0 tie in early October at Greensboro College. In the CAC Tournament, Salisbury secured home field advantage and defeated Gallaudet, 4-0, and Mary Washington, 3-2, en route to the championship game against York. The Sea Gulls, however, fell to the Spartans, 1-0.

In the NCAA tournament, the team was chosen to host a series of first-round games, drawing City College of New York, the Stevens Institute of Technology, and Eastern University to Salisbury. Salisbury began the tournament with a 5-0 victory over CCNY, on the strength of two goals from freshman Scott Sparrow. Stevens defeated Eastern in the later game, 1-0, to advance to a second round game with Salisbury. In the second-round game, Salisbury was eliminated by Stevens, 1-0, as the Ducks scored late in the second half to secure the victory.

Salisbury Eliminated by Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0
November 12, 2005

STEVENS-SALISBURY BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men’s soccer team (17-3-1) was ousted from the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship tournament Saturday, as the Stevens Institute of Technology (16-3-2) defeated the Sea Gulls, 1-0.

The teams fought for possession of the ball constantly in the first half, resulting in a scoreless tie at the halftime break. The game would appear to go into overtime, until Ducks sophomore forward Mike Kaiser (Roy, UT/Roy) scored the lone goal for Stevens at the 87:50 mark of regulation. Kaiser received a pass from teammate Ryan Wilkinson (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) and beat Salisbury goalkeeper Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Calvert) with a header on an odd man rush.

Salisbury held the advantage in corner kicks, five to three. The Sea Gulls were unable to convert, however, as they were out shot by the Ducks, ten to six. Stevens senior Brian Marks (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) tied sophomore Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, MI/Adams) to lead the Ducks with two shots a piece.

Salisbury senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) lead the Sea Gulls in shots with four.  Layne Crothers (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) and Scott Sparrow (Parsonsburg, MD/Parkside) each had one shot a piece.

Stevens junior goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, NJ/Newton) stopped four shots on goal to preserve the shut out. Cranford stopped two of three shots on goal for the Sea Gulls.

Stevens will await the result of the 8:00 p.m. contest between Webster and Trinity College of Texas to determine their next opponent in the 2005 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship.

Ducks goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, NJ/Newton) stopped all three shots on his goal to preserve the shutout.

Stevens out shot Eastern nine to eight and held the advantage in corner kicks, three to two. Eastern was hurt by numerous fouls, totaling 16 to Steven’s eight. Late in the second half, the Eastern bench was called for a caution for arguing.

Spartans Defeat Sea Gulls to Capture Men's Soccer Crown
November 5, 2005

SALISBURY-YORK STATISTICS
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury fifth ranked men’s soccer team came into today’s match against York College, looking to capture their fifth CAC championship and fourth straight. The team, however, came up short against the No. 16 ranked Spartans, losing 1-0.

The match was very physical, as the two sides accumulated 34 fouls combined. Two cautions were given out to both sides, with York’s Kyle McGrath and Scott McDowell receiving yellow cards in the first half, and Sea Gulls J.J. King (Damascus, MD/Damascus) and Dave Pusinsky (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) received yellow cards in the second half.

The only scoring of the day came from York forward Chris Ports, as he placed a pass from Matthew Beale past Sea Gulls goalkeeper Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Calvert) to give York the 1-0 advantage in the 22nd minute of play.

York would dominate the first half of play, but Salisbury was able to get some opportunities in the second half, receiving six corner kicks. Unfortunately, the Sea Gulls failed to cash in. York would appear to make it 2-0 when Matthew Beale placed a shot past Cranford in the 36th minute. The goal was waived off, however, as the Spartans were called offside.

York would out shoot Salisbury 13-11 on the day. Cranford stopped six of seven shots on goal, while Spartans goalkeeper Kyle Marks would stop all three Sea Gull shots on goal.

Sea Gulls Scott Forney (Crofton, MD/South River), Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown), and King each had two shots a piece to lead the team. Layne Crothers (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen), Reid Klopp (Salisbury, MD/Parkside), Pusinsky, Scott Sparrow (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett), and Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) each had one shot apiece.

The Sea Gulls will now await their fate Sunday as the NCAA tournament field is determined. York is in the tournament by virtue of capturing the conference crown. Salisbury must hope that a 16-2-1 mark will persuade the selection committee to give Salisbury a spot in the tournament.

Men's Soccer Advances to CAC Final With 3-2 Win over UMW
November 1, 2005

SALISBURY-MARY WASHINGTON BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The No.5-ranked Salisbury University men’s soccer team was pushed to the limit Tuesday afternoon by the University of Mary Washington, but the top-seeded Sea Gulls rose to the occasion and advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference tournament title match for the 12th straight season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Eagles at the SU Soccer Complex.

The Sea Gulls (16-1-1), who remained in the No.1 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll and No.1 in the South Region despite suffering their first loss of the season last week, will attempt to capture their sixth CAC title in seven years and receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs with a win Saturday. Salisbury will host No.16-ranked (No.3 in South Region) and No.2-seed York College of Pennsylvania at 1:30 p.m. York knocked off St. Mary’s College, 1-0, in the other league semifinal on Tuesday.

Salisbury, which finished with a 16-10 shot advantage in the game, took a 1-0 with 4:08 gone in the contest when Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown) centered the ball from the right flank and it was booted around directly in front of the goal before Layne Crothers (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) banged a shot into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the year.

Mary Washington’s Bryan Beers scored his first goal of the season with 2:19 remaining before intermission when he took a corner kick from Tommy Park and headed the ball high toward the goal. The ball hit the cross bar and bounce straight down and over the line for the score to knot the score at 1-1.

It appeared the score was going to be tied at intermission. But as time was running out, Dan Butler (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) became aggressive with a loose ball that was being batted around in front of the goal and sliced a shot into the left corner of the goal as time expired.

Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Patomac Falls) took a long crossing pass from J.J. King (Damascus, Md./Damascus) just 3:22 into the second half and drove a low shot into the goal to give SU a two-goal cushion, 3-1.

Mary Washington’s Andrew Shin made the contest interesting with 6:54 remaining when he was fouled in the box and drove a hard penalty kick into the left corner of the goal to cut the Sea Gulls’ advantage to 3-2.

The game remained close throughout the final seven minutes and both teams, which combined for 41 fouls, remained physical. But Salisbury held off the Eagles.

Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) picked up the win in goal for Salisbury, recording four saves. Elliott Jones took the loss for Mary Washington, finishing with eight saves.

No.5 Men's Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale, 1-0
October 26, 2005

SALISBURY-MARYMOUNT BOXSCORE
MCLEAN, Va. - After 40 consecutive regular season matches without a loss, the Salisbury University men’s soccer team dropped its final regular season match of 2005 Wednesday afternoon when the No.5-ranked Sea Gulls (14-1-1, 6-1 CAC) out shot Marymount University 17-6, but were handed a 1-0 setback by the Saints. It was the first-ever victory by the Marymount men’s soccer program over Salisbury.

The last time Salisbury had dropped a regular season match was on Oct. 1, 2003 when the Sea Gulls fell to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent St. Mary’s, 1-0. The loss to Marymount (6-9-2, 2-3-1 CAC) marked the first loss to a league opponent in 24 tries (23-0-1), including a 17-0-1 record during regular season play. SU had posted a 37-0-3 record in its last 40 regular season matches.

Despite the loss, Salisbury still holds a half-game leading in the CAC standings over second-place York College (13-2-2, 5-1 CAC). The Spartans will host Goucher College and Gallaudet (2-15, 0-6 CAC) will travel to St. Mary’s College (10-6-1, 3-2-1 CAC) on Thursday to conclude league play. However, Salisbury holds the tie-breaker over York by virtue of the Sea Gulls’ 1-0 defeat of the Spartans on Sept. 17.

The Sea Gulls will enter the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament as the No.1 seed, while York will go in as No.2. The Gulls will take on either Goucher (5-8-2, 1-5 CAC) or Gallaudet in the opening round of play on Saturday at the SU Soccer Complex. The starting time has yet to be determined.

After a scoreless first half, Marymount’s Justin Kessler scored the game-winner at the 52:56 mark when he took a pass from Andrew Stearns and put the ball in the back of the net.

Only one Salisbury starter failed to get a shot off, but none of SU’s efforts were able to get past Saints’ goalie Brian Craddock, who recorded 11 saves. Jason Cranford took the loss for the Sea Gulls in goal, finishing with a pair of saves. After out shooting the Saints 5-1 in the first half, SU held a 12-5 advantage in the final 45 minutes.

SALISBURY, Md. -The Salisbury University men’s soccer team gave up two goals for the first time during the 2005 season Wednesday afternoon, but the No.1-ranked team in the NCAA Division III South Region had enough offensive power to knock off No.4 Christopher Newport University, 3-2, at the SU Soccer Complex.

Sea Gull senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) scored the hat trick, using assists from seniors Reid Klopp (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) and Chris Mills (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown), as Salisbury, which moved up two spots to the No.5-ranking in the NSCAA national poll, improved to 14-0-1 overall. Christopher Newport, which was allowing less than a goal per contest, fell to 9-4.

Whittington and the Gulls got out of the gate quickly as the team’s assist leader (5) took a leading pass from Klopp on Salisbury’s first possession and scored from 10 yards out just 30 seconds in to the match.

The Captains responded with a goal of their own at the 4:57 mark when Daniel Fogarty took a pass, dribbled and sliced a low shot past SU goalie Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Calvert).

Whittington put Salisbury back on top 2-1 at the 25:13 mark. A Mills shot on goal bounced off the left post, but Whittington was there to pound the ball into the back of the net.

Fogarty scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 2:40 later after Kenny Huttman’s shot was blocked by a SU defender and he was there to knock it in the goal, tying the score at 2-2.

Cranford came up with a leaping save with 14:35 remaining in the half when Huttman’s free kick just outside the box sailed over the Sea Gull defenders who were lined up, tailing in toward the net. But Cranford was there to make the catch, forcing the 2-2 tie at intermission.

The game remained tied for quite some time in the second half, but Whittington broke the tie with 7:38 remaining with his team-leading 12th goal of the year off a pass from Mills.

Salisbury, which is ranked second nationally in goals against average (0.21), and first in shots on goal save percentage (.947), held off the late CNU charge, keeping the ball out of its own net. SU, which out shot CNU 16-13 for the game, owned a 9-1 advantage in the second half. The Gulls held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Cranford improved to 5-0 on the year in goal, surrendering a pair of goals, but recording four saves. Jonathon Anderson took the setback despite turning in five saves.
