Sea Gulls Host Marymount in CAC Women's Basketball Championship
The
#1 Sea Gulls (23-4) and #2 Saints (21-6) are facing each other for the 11th
time in the past three seasons. They split their two regular season contests
this season, with Salisbury winning 74-61 at home on January 29, and Marymount
prevailing 62-52 at home on February 19. That
loss snapped a 12-game Salisbury winning streak. Salisbury
advanced to Saturday’s championship after dismissing #8 Gallaudet 92-51 in
Tuesday’s quarterfinal and clipping #5 Catholic 54-49 in Thursday’s
semifinal. Marymount advanced with victories over #7 Goucher and #6 Mary
Washington. Salisbury
is making its sixth overall appearance in the CAC Championship Game. The Gulls
have met Marymount in four of their previous five title game appearances.
Marymount defeated Salisbury in the 1995 and 1996 championship games, while
Salisbury has defeated Marymount in each of the past two years (70-67 in 2001,
71-56 in 2002). The home team has won each of those games. SU also beat St.
Mary’s in the 2000 championship. The
Sea Gulls have won 15 of their last 16 games this season and have claimed
victories in 50 of their last 53 CAC regular season and tournament games since
2000. Currently riding an 11-game winning streak in CAC Tournament games, SU is
trying to become just the second team in conference history to win the
championship for at least four straight years.
With
23 victories this season, Salisbury is one win away from tying its
single-season record for wins. SU has posted 24 victories in each of the past
two seasons. Team
defense has been one of the keys to Salisbury’s success throughout this
season. The Gulls have held four of their last six opponents to less than 60
points scored. Opponents have a 38.0% field goal shooting percentage, including
31.1% for Gallaudet and 22.7% for Catholic in this week’s CAC Tournament
games. The
field for 2003 NCAA Championship Tournament will be announced on Sunday
evening, March 2. The CAC Tournament winner will receive one of 37 automatic
bids, while the runnerup will vie for one of the 13 at-large spots. The NCAA
Tournament begins with 18 first round games at campus sites on Wednesday, March
5. Tickets for the CAC Championship game are $5 for adults and $2 for students with a valid ID. Children below the age of five are admitted free. No complimentary tickets will be issued.

“It will depend on how many we can put into the top 12 spots in the

Where we finish will come down to the last couple of events.” The
top individual swimmers for the SU women will be sophomores Ashley Letterman
