Swim Teams Ready to Begin New Season
Oct 21, 2003

Salisbury, MD – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s swim teams open the 2003-2004 season on Saturday, October 25 with a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA.

Salisbury will look to six upperclassmen on the men’s team and nine on the women’s team to help lead the Sea Gulls to the top of the Capital Athletic Conference standings this season.  The Sea Gulls will start the season with three out of their first four meets against conference opponents.

“We are very excited to get going,” said ninth year Head Coach Jill Stephenson.  “We have had a chance to get ready through two inter-squad meets and an alumni meet.  I think the team is ready for the real competition to start.”

The men’s team will look to junior Ryan Kooy (breaststroke), who broke three team records in the 2003 CAC Championships, and junior Doug Vedeloff (freestyle/IM) to provide leadership for its five freshmen and get off to a fast start.

A trio of juniors, Alyson Hammond (freestyle), Rachel Lazarick (freestyle), and Meredith Rathkamp (backstroke), will give the Sea Gull women stability throughout the season.

“Our versatility this season will be a big advantage for us,” said Stephenson.  “It will give us more options on where and when we can swim.  The newcomers, particularly, give us more versatility.  We can put people in spots where they can do their best.”

The Sea Gulls hope to improve from last season, when the men finished 3-6 overall (3-4 in the CAC), and the women finished 4-6 overall (3-4 in the CAC).  The men placed sixth and the women finished seventh at the conference championships.

“We must work on our team spirit and cohesion.  Last season, we had a good group, but they didn’t click,” said Stephenson.  “If we can work on our team togetherness and dynamics, it can make our team better all around.  Once we do that we can achieve our number one goal of placing higher in the championships.”

The Gulls will open their home schedule on Saturday, November 1 against Gallaudet.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Maggs Center.

Men's Soccer Tops No. 19 Roanoke, 2-0
Oct 15, 2003

Salisbury, MD – Salisbury University recorded its fourth straight shutout and ninth of the season Wednesday afternoon as the Sea Gulls stopped No. 19 Roanoke College, 2-0, at the SU Athletics Complex.

Both teams entered this week’s play ranked in the Top 5 of the South Region, according to the NCSAA/adidas Poll. In addition to their Top 20 ranking in the national poll, the Maroons (9-3-1) hold the No. 3 spot in the region. Salisbury (8-2-2) is at No. 5.

The Sea Gulls took a 1-0 lead at intermission on a goal by sophomore Christopher Mills. Mills took a crossing pass from sophomore Tim Lane, dribbled once and then powered a shot into the back of the net with 31:08 gone. It was Mills’ third goal of the year.

The score remained the same until Salisbury sophomore David Pusinsky scored his second goal of the season off a Mills assist with 13:30 remaining to put the game out of reach.

#3 Salisbury 3, #4 Rowan 1
Field Hockey

Salisbury, MD – It was a classic battle of nationally ranks squads, featuring excellent defenses and opportunistic offenses as No. 3-ranked Salisbury held fourth-ranked Rowan to just four shots in a 3-1 victory at the SU Athletics Complex Tuesday.

The Sea Gulls, who dropped from the NFHCA's No. 1 ranking this week, rebounded from a 4-1 setback on Saturday to College of New Jersey, which was ranked No. 3 at the time. SU opened up a 1-0 lead at intermission against the Profs Tuesday, while holding RU to no shots in the first half.

There were only two shots by both squads in the first 25 minutes, but the Sea Gulls (10-1) made their attempts count, scoring at the 8:09 mark to open up an early lead. Freshman Megan Powell took a cross from sophomore Brittany Elliott and scored from five yards out. Freshman Lynette Sgrignoli gave Salisbury a 2-0 lead 11:52 into the second half when she forced in a shot from short range.

Rowan (7-3), which knocked Salisbury from the Division III National Tournament in the semi-finals a year ago, kept the score close when Rhonda Bennett scored off a Michelle Thornton pass at the 51:13 mark. But the lead was short-lived as senior Lindsey Elliott put a miss by Erin Budd back into the box just 1:08 later.

The Sea Gulls will return to action Thursday when they travel to Washington (Md) College. SU will be back at home Saturday with a 12 p.m. game against Frostburg State.

No. 1 Field Hockey Falls to No. 3 New Jersey, 4-1
Oct 11, 2003

Ewing, NJ - In a battle between two top five teams, The College of New Jersey's third-ranked field hockey team handed Division III's top-ranked team, Salisbury University, its first loss of the 2003 season. The Lions defeated Salisbury, 4-1, to snap the Sea Gulls' nine-game win streak in Saturday's non-conference match-up. The win improves TCNJ's record to 10-1 overall, while Salisbury drops to 9-1 on the year.

Freshman forward Tracey Lloyd gave the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead at 15:09 as she sat on the goalie's pads and deflected junior Melissa Webster's incoming shot to the right of the Lions' keeper. With her 10th of the season, junior forward Colleen Stamler knotted the game, 1-1, at 24:08 after connecting with rookie Blair Alber. Alber slid a pass through the Salisbury defense and Stamler swept it into the back of the goal. Senior forward Jessica Hamway put TCNJ up 2-1 with 49 seconds left in the half, scoring off an assists from senior Jackie Levy.

In the second half, Stamler struck again at 39:51 to push the Lions ahead 3-1. She swatted a bouncing pass from freshman forward Allison Greene into the lower right corner from about eight yards out. Junior Kim Feeley recorded TCNJ's final tally at 60:12 as she redirected the rebound off a defensive save by Salisbury's junior defender Erin Budd.

TCNJ's sophomore keeper Kristina Beyel had six saves, while senior Melissa Taylor had four saves in the loss for SU. Both teams were even on shots as they each had nine shots, while the Sea Gulls had 10 penalty corners to TCNJ's five.

Men's Soccer Clips York in OT, 1-0
Oct 11, 2003

York, PA - The Salisbury men’s soccer team continued to play excellent defense Saturday afternoon, recording its eighth shutout of the season as the Sea Gulls ended York’s seven-match win streak with a 1-0 overtime win over the Spartans. The Sea Gulls improve to 7-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 11-3-1 and 4-1 in the league.

The first half was played at a frenetic pace as both teams were going up and down the field. The Sea Gulls held a very slight 9-8 advantage in first half shots while the Spartans had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Both teams had three shots on goal in the first half.

The second half was much of the same type of play as both teams took turn making runs and counters. The first great scoring chance of the half came in the 49th minute of play as the Sea Gulls had a corner. After the ball was delivered into the box, it got batted around before an unidentified Gull launched the ball towards the top of the goal. Spartan netminder Michael Cook made a punch save to preserve the scoreless tie.

With 19:24 left in regulation, Scott McDowell, York's leading scorer, was stoned on a penalty kick as SU's Jason Cranford dove to his right to keep the ball out of the goal. The two teams went to overtime after neither team could convert in the remaining 20 minutes of regulation.

The Sea Gulls won the game just 3:25 into the overtime as Bill Whittington took the ball down the right sideline, drawing the Spartan defenders to him. Whittington then crossed it to Christopher Mills who booted home the game-winner to the right side of the net.

The Sea Gulls finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Cook made six saves for the Spartans while Cranford recorded five stops for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury returns to action Wednesday when the Sea Gulls host Roanoke at 4 p.m.

Salisbury (5-7) out shot the Profs 9-6 in the opening period, but still trailed 2-0 at halftime. The Sea Gulls recorded four shots in the second half, while limiting Rowan (9-3-1) to just three, but despite several golden opportunities, could not put the ball in the goal. They lost despite a 13-9 advantage in shots for the match.

Jeanine Swezey led the Sea Gulls with three shots, while Thea Zygmunt, Heather Pallett and Brandi Sproul each added a pair. Rachel Cerza, Kathleen Tiedmann, Leanne Argue and Sara Nickoles recorded one each.
