Senior Pitcher Lacey Lister Signs Pro Softball Contract
May 22, 2006

SALISBURY, MD - Senior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) has signed a deal with the Michigan Ice of the National Pro Fast-Pitch League to continue her softball career. The Salisbury first team All-American is the first SU player to ever go professional in softball.

The Michigan Ice will be playing as an independent team in its first year in the NPF, but if all goes well, they will join as an official member in 2007. The season includes 28 games against other pro and national teams such as Arizona, Chicago, the Japanese National Team, the Canadian Elite and the Venezuelan National Team. The National Pro Fast Pitch League currently has seven teams, and Michigan’s games, although technically independent for one season, will count as toward league standings. The season begins on June 7, 2006 and ends on August 20.

The full 18 woman roster is set to be released this Thursday. The summer season is a full time job, and Lister will be staying with a host family in Michigan. The host families normally have young kids for which the softball players serve as role models.

Lister’s outstanding collegiate career includes numerous national records. She ranks third all-time in victories (108), fifth all-time in winning percentage (.880), eighth all-time in earned run average (0.83), third all-time in strikeouts (1,096), and third all-time in shutouts (50).

This season, Lister posted an 18-5 record with 1.30 earned run average.  Her 228 strikeouts is a team high while her strikeouts per seven innings are among the best nationally.

Lister, Ruest Named Softball All-Americans
May 21, 2006

SALISBURY, Md. - Senior’s Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) and Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) continued to pile on the individual achievements for the Sea Gulls by being named first team All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In addition to being named All-Americans, both Lister and Ruest were Co-Players of the Year in the Capital Athletic Conference and most recently named to the first team All-Atlantic Region.

Ruest, a first team first-base selection, was the team leader in virtually every offensive statistical category and has been the force that drove the Sea Gull’s offense all year long.  Her .520 batting average didn’t just lead the Salisbury offensive, but it ranked top ten nationally. Ruest is also ranked sixth nationally in slugging percentage at .920.

Along with her national rankings, Ruest had team highs in hits (65), runs batted in (45), on base percentage (.599), homeruns (11), total bases (115), walks (26), and triples (3).  Ruest was just as dominate in the field where she committed only one error in 257 chances for a fielding percentage of .996.

In her four years at Salisbury, Lister has been no stranger to the individual achievements.  In 2003, as a freshman, she was named second team All-American pitcher and followed that up by a third team at-large selection in 2004 and a second team at-large selection in 2005.  This season she was recognized as a first team at-large selection for her dominance on the mound.

Lister’s career has been nothing short of spectacular for the Sea Gulls.

Sea Gulls Eliminated by Greyhounds of Moravian, 2-1
May 13, 2006

SALISBURY-MORAVIAN BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The second seeded Salisbury University softball team was defeated by fourth seeded Moravian College 2-1 in the NCAA Regional Tournament Saturday at Sea Gull Field.  The showdown featured two of the countries best pitchers, three-time All-American senior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) for Salisbury and two-time All-American Meagan Hennessy for Moravian. The loss eliminates the Sea Gulls from the tournament, thus ending their season.

Lister pitched six innings allowing four hits and giving up two earned runs while striking out three batters. In the bottom of the second, Lister got into trouble after walking two consecutive batters but was able to get through the inning with a ground out.

Lister got a lot of help in the field when by sophomore center fielder Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond) made a back handed diving catch in the left center gap.  After two greyhound singles, junior right fielder Jodie Lehrer (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) sprinted in to make the inning ending catch keeping the score tied at zero.

Moravian went out front on a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the fourth. Lister followed to getting two groundouts to end the inning. Lister retired the side in the fifth.

Salisbury threatened in the sixth when freshman left fielder Meaghan O’ Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) was hit by a pitch and junior catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) singled through the infield. Hennessy was able to end the rally by getting a Sea Gull pop up.

Salisbury bats heated up in the seventh. Junior second baseman Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) reached first base when her hard hit grounder was mishandled.  Schrader’s sacrifice bunt advanced freshman pinch runner Brittney Sullivan (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) to second. Sophomore third baseman Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) nearly brought the Sea Gulls all the way back when she crushed a fast ball to deep center but the wind held the ball up as it hit the top of the fence missing a game tying home run by a few inches. Sullivan scored on the double, cutting the lead in half at 2-1. The Sea Gulls bowed out swinging with the final out coming on a tough line drive.

Lister finished her historic career as the Salisbury all-time leader with 108 wins and 1096 strikeouts; both are third overall in NCAA history. Lister also holds school records in complete games, innings pitched, winning percentage, earned-run average, and shutouts.  She threw four no-hitters and one perfect game.

Salisbury Suffers Loss to Ramapo in Second Round, 6-3
May 12, 2006

SALISBURY-RAMAPO BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The NCAA softball tournament continued regional action on Friday, but the Sea Gulls did not fare as well. The No. 2 seed Salisbury fell to the No. 3 seeded Roadrunners of Ramapo College. The Gulls will return to action on Saturday at 12:00 pm in an elimination game against the winner of the King’s vs. Moravian.

The Sea Gulls got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning as they were the visiting team. It was evident that Salisbury came into the contest with intensity and used that emotion to take an early lead. After singles by Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) and Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard), Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) delivered a single through the right side that scored O’Gara and Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) who reached on an error. The two-out single by Fuqua was followed by a hit batsman, but the Sea Gulls could not add to the lead while they had Ramapo on its heels. Consequently, the first inning contained most of the Salisbury offense, and Ramapo would compose themselves and respond to the quick start.

In the second, Michele Rossi hit a two-run homer off Sea Gull starter Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline). Erica Moore would add a two-run shot of her own in the bottom of the fifth to put the Roadrunners ahead 4-3, a lead they would not give up. Moore’s blast was her 15th of the season, and it gave Ramapo the spark they needed against the tough pitching of Lister.

Salisbury would manage only three hits after the first inning off Marissa Marino who improved to 14-5 with the win. Ruest and O’Gara each had two hits and Fuqua had all three RBI, but the Sea Gulls lacked the big inning that usually puts away their opponents. Salisbury left six runners on base and did not manage any extra base hits against Marino.

The Roadrunners added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when pinch hitter Mickey O’Connor doubled to right center. Ramapo will face the No. 1 seeded Monarchs of Methodist in the early game at 10:00 am on Saturday.

Salisbury Rolls Past Haverford in NCAA First Round, 6-2
May 11, 2006

SALISBURY-HAVERFORD BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The NCAA softball tournament got underway with first round games in Salisbury, the regional host. The No. 2 seeded Sea Gulls pleased the crowd with their 6-2 victory over No. 6 Haverford. Salisbury now meets the No. 3 seeded Ramapo Roadrunners on Friday at 2:00 pm for an intriguing match-up.

The Sea Gulls played a solid team game in their opening win, gathering ten hits on the day. The biggest of those ten was a third inning grand slam by centerfielder Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond). Schrader’s lone hit of the game was a base-clearer that nicked the top of the fence before going over and giving the Gulls four runs on one swing of the bat. The excitement carried over to the next at-bat when Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) hit a solo homerun to give Salisbury a 6-0 lead that they wouldn’t give up.

Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) picked up the win for the Sea Gulls, allowing two runs on two hits over seven innings and striking out six. Lister continues to pursue the all-time Division III strikeout mark as she sits less than 40 Ks away. Her record improves to 18-3.

In Sea Gull fashion, offensive contributions came from everywhere. Notably, Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) and Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) who combined for five singles in six at-bats on the day. Both Dronenburg and Wells were on base for the Schrader homer. Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) pitched in with an RBI double in the second, plating the first Gull.

Haverford suffered the loss in its first NCAA softball tournament appearance, but they will have a chance for a victory on Friday as they must now come out of the loser’s bracket. The Fords were led by their centerfielder, Nagle, who had both hits.

Salisbury Splits Doubleheader with Gettysburg College
May 2, 2006

SALISBURY-GETTYSBURG BOXSCORES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Salisbury softball team (32-6) split a doubleheader against the Bullets of Gettysburg College (25-14), winning game one, 2-1, and losing game two, 3-2, with both games going into extra innings to decide a winner. Senior pitcher Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) worked in both games, picking up the win in game one after working eight innings, surrendering one earned run on five hits while striking out twelve; and losing game two, working the final three and a third, giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out six.

In game one, Gettysburg broke out in front first, scoring in the bottom of the second as catcher Abbe Miller tripled and then scored on a single by second baseman Jessica Wallick. The Sea Gulls used late inning runs, however, to take the lead, including a big solo homerun in the top of the sixth by Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) to tie the game at one. In the Salisbury eighth, the Sea Gulls scored the winning run without the benefit of a base hit as Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson), who was placed on second base because of the international tie breaker rule, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport)

Gettysburg starter Shannon Kiry took the loss in game one, surrendering one earned run on three hits while striking out four. Due to international tie breaker rules, the team was charged with the winning run in the eighth.

Salisbury opened the scoring in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the second on three hits. With one out, center fielder Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Howard) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a bunt single by Hoffman, and scored on a sharp single down the right field line by Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key). Malarkey would score later in the inning on a wild pitch by Gettysburg starter Kristy Rubino.

Gettysburg tied the score in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on two hits, including a two-run homerun by center fielder Heather Sagaities. The Bullets would then score the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, as pinch runner Ali Stoll, who was placed on second because of the tiebreaker rule, scored on a single by Wallick.

Rubino would earn the win in game two, working eight innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out six.

Gettysburg out-hit Salisbury on the day, collecting twelve hits to the Sea Gulls’ eleven on the day. In addition to Ruest in game one, Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) collected hits. In game two, Malarkey led the offense, collecting two hits in three at-bats with a run scored and a run driven in.

Salisbury will now await their seeding in the upcoming NCAA Division III Softball World Series, set to begin on Friday, May 12, 2006. Times and locations have yet to be determined.

April 26, 2006

2006 ALL-CAC SOFTBALL TEAM
SALISBURY, Md. - After defeating Catholic, 10-0, and Mary Washington, 2-0, on Sunday, April 23, to capture the CAC conference title, the conference honored the Salisbury softball team on Wednesday, naming five sea gulls to the 2006 squad. Seniors Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) and Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) were each named CAC Co-Players of the Year for the 2006 season.

In addition to Lister and Ruest, junior catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard), and freshmen utility players Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) and Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) were named to the team.

Through the CAC tournament, Lister has been a star on the mound, recording a 15-2 record on the season, allowing just fourteen earned runs in 111 innings pitched on the season, amassing an ERA of 0.88 for the year. Lister has also recorded a stellar 185 strikeouts on the season, averaging a little over eight punch-outs per appearance. Lister has also tossed a perfect game against Guilford College on March 3 and a no-hitter against Catholic in the CAC tournament on April 23.

Ruest has been the top hitter for the Sea Gulls, leading the team with a .545 average in 34 games at first base, while hitting ten homeruns and driving in thirty-seven on the season. Ruest has also only committed one error on the season, recording a .996 fielding percentage.

The University of Mary Washington won two individual awards, as Cathy Hull took the Rookie of the Year award, while her coach, Dee Conway, was named Coach of the Year. Conway led the Eagles to a 27-16 record and was runners-up in the CAC tournament.

Salisbury will return to action Thursday, April 27 as they travel to Severna Park, Maryland to take on Villa Julie College for a doubleheader at 6:30 p.m.

Sea Gulls Claim CAC Title, Defeating CUA, 10-0, and UMW, 2-0
April 23, 2006

SALISBURY 10, CATHOLIC 0
BOXSCORE

SALISBURY, Md. – Due to inclement weather, the Capital Athletic Conference Softball Tournament become single elimination. The Sea Gulls had to resume their game against Catholic University in the bottom of the second inning with a 1-0 lead. The winner of this game would face the awaiting Eagles of Mary Washington who downed York on Saturday.

Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) took her place in the batter’s box about 24 hours after her original at bat. With two down, Shaffer blasted a double to left field, scoring Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond) from second. Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) followed with a double off the left field fence, and with those ringing hits, Salisbury set the tone as the #1 seed in the CAC tournament.

Salisbury would match the inning number with runs scored, plating one in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. Leading 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) launched the first pitch well over the right field fence, and four batters later, Schrader belted a three-run homer to give the Sea Gulls a 10-0 advantage and induce the mercy rule.

On the mound, Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) threw a five inning no-hitter, striking out six and allowing just one walk. Lister continues to climb up the all-time Division III pitching lists, and with her second no-hitter of the season, Lister pitched the Gulls into the CAC Championship.

SALISBURY 2, MARY WASHINGTON 0
BOXSCORE

Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston)
started on the mound for Salisbury as they faced Mary Washington and starter Abbey Wineland. Wells threw five and two-thirds, scattering six hits and holding the Eagles scoreless. Lister recorded the save, tossing an inning and a third of hitless relief.

Like UMW, the Sea Gulls were held to six hits, but consecutive base-knocks in the bottom of the third gave Salisbury the 2-0 advantage that they would never relinquish. O’Gara started the hitting with a single to center and Ruest followed with a double to right. Freshman Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) came through with a clutch single to score both runners, providing the 2-0 cushion.

The Eagles got a solid outing from Wineland as she struck out seven in six innings of work. A costly error wiped a run off the board for Mary Washington as an Eagle runner was called out for a baserunning infraction.

But, the day belonged to the Sea Gulls who claimed their tenth straight CAC Title and improved their record to 29-5. Salisbury will return to action against Villa Julie on April 30.

Sea Gulls Softball Thrashes Wolverines of Wesley College, 12-0, 15-0
April 14, 2006

SALISBURY-WESLEY BOXSCORES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

WESLEY, De. – The Salisbury softball team (27-5) traveled to Wesley, Delaware on Friday afternoon and defeated the Wolverines of Wesley College in a pair of routs, 12-0 and 15-0. The Sea Gulls were not only led by the offense, but also by their stellar pitching.

In game one, starter Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up just three baserunners – one hit and two walks – while striking eight in five innings of work. In game two, starter Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and reliever Kortni Pedlow (Elkton, MD/St. Mark’s) combined to no-hit the Wolverines. Wells only allowed one baserunnner, a walk, and Pedlow allowed only two walks while striking out one.

In game one, the Sea Gulls scored single runs in the first and the third on RBI singles by Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) and Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard). Salisbury would then bust the game open in the fourth, scoring five times on four hits. Outfielder Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) highlighted the inning with two-run double, while Wells added an RBI single and Dronenburg added a bases loaded walk for an RBI.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Sea Gulls added five more runs on five hits and a crucial error by Wesley second baseman Amber Vanderwende. Right fielder Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) starred in this inning, as she drove in a run and then stole home for another run. Vanderwende’s error would then let in another run for Salisbury. O’Gara added another RBI hit in the inning and Ruest would late score on a wild pitch to end the scoring.

In game two, Salisbury opened the scoring in the second, plating three runs on two hits, led by a two-run single by Malarkey. A supposed groundout to the shortstop by shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) would turn into a run as Wesley’s Ang Boone misplayed the ball and Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) scored.
Salisbury’s big innings would be the third and fourth. In the third, the Sea Gulls scored five runs on six hits, highlighted by an RBI single by Welles, a two-run triple by Hoffman, an RBI double by Malarkey, and a sacrifice fly by O’Gara to score Malarkey. In the fourth, Salisbury added six more runs on six hits, highlighted by a two-run triple by Shaffer.

At the plate, the Sea Gulls were led on the afternoon by O’Gara, who collected three hits in five at-bats, scoring one run and driving in three. Wells also collected four hits in seven at-bats, driving in four and scoring two.

Wesley’s offense would be just a double in the second inning of game two off of Lister by center fielder Kelly Caton. On the mound in game one, starter Cole Murtaugh pitched four innings, giving up eleven runs, eight earned on ten hits while giving up five walks and striking out two. Game two starter Jessica Morgan pitched the first three for Wesley, giving up eleven runs, seven earned on eleven hits while walking two.

Salisbury will now return to action during the CAC tournament, which is set to begin next Saturday, April 22, with the semi-finals. The game that was scheduled for April 18 at Virginia Wesleyan College has been postponed.

Salisbury Softball Sweeps Spartans of York College, 5-1, 2-1
April 9, 2006

SALISBURY-YORK BOXSCORES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

SALISBURY, Md. - The #13 ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls grabbed a pair of wins from Capital Athletic Conference rival York College to improve to 25-5 (7-1 CAC). The Spartans fell to 16-12 overall and 4-4 in the CAC. On a day when Salisbury hitters were relatively quiet, the Sea Gull pitchers delivered solid outings in support.

In game one, Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) shut down the Spartan bats and led the Gulls to victory. Fresh off a start that provided Lister with her 100th win and 1,000th strikeout, the senior fanned 16 batters and allowed only three hits for her 101st win. With the overpowering performance, Lister moves into third place all-time on the Division III strikeout list, and she improves her season record to 12-2.

Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) led off the game with a deep homerun in the first inning, her sixth of the season. Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) blasted a two-run double in the third, scoring Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) and Shaffer. But, runs would not be this easy to come by the rest of the day as Salisbury would strand 20 runners in the two games, leaving 14 on base in the second game alone.

As mentioned, the second game was a struggle to get runners across the plate. Eventually, Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) would drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off single. When the game remains tied after eight innings, international tiebreaker rules come into effect. Each team places a runner at second base, allowing a greater chance for scoring, and the inning is then played as normal. Salisbury converted the opportunity as Erin Ruest singled Shaffer to third and Dronenburg finished the job with her base hit to center.

The Sea Gulls held a 1-0 lead going into the seventh inning as Kirsten Wells was pitching a one-hitter. York rallied behind back-to-back, two-out hits from Shannon Wood and Andrea Tombesi. After the Spartans tied the score on Tombesi’s double, Lister replaced Wells and shut down the York hitters once again to earn her second win of the day. Dronenburg, Ruest and Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) each had two-hit games for the Sea Gulls.

The Sea Gulls return to action when they travel to Delaware to battle Wesley College on Friday, April 14.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Salisbury softball team continued their remarkable season Thursday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader from the Shorewomen of Washington College with scores of 9-0 and 10-1. Salisbury first baseman Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) blasted two homeruns on the afternoon, one in each game, collecting three hits in six at-bats while scoring three runs and driving in six on the afternoon.

Salisbury would add two runs in the fourth, highlighted by Ruest’s first homerun of the day; one run in the fifth with Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) picking up the RBI, and two runs in the sixth with a homerun to left center by Dronenburg, her second round-tripper of the season.

Green, right fielder Beth Anne Hartman, outfielder Stef Morgan, and catcher Kim Proctor collected the only hits for the Shorewomen in game one.

In game two, Salisbury would score four in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth to overpower the Shorewomen. Sea Gulls starter Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) earned the win, giving up one earned run on seven hits while striking out six. Shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) was a catalyst for the Sea Gulls, collecting two hits in three at-bats while scoring three runs and driving in two, all coming on fifth homerun of the season in the fifth inning. Ruest also remained on a torrid streak at the plate, collecting two hits in three at-bats while scoring one and driving in four, all coming in on a grand slam in the top of the fourth.

Other Sea Gulls to collect RBIs in the game included a two-run single by Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) in the fourth and a two-run double by Malarkey in the fifth.

Salisbury will look to remain hot going into the CAC tournament as they return to action Saturday, April 8, as they host York College in doubleheader action set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The team will then travel to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College on Friday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. then to Virginia Beach, Virginia to take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Salisbury Takes a Pair from the Cardinals of Catholic, 11-2, 9-3
April 4, 2006

SALISBURY-CATHOLIC BOXSCORES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

SALISBURY, Md. - The #13 Salisbury Sea Gulls (21-5, 5-1 CAC) took care of business with two Capital Athletic Conference victories over Catholic University (17-12, 3-5 CAC). The double-header sweep of the Cardinals had a little bit of everything from history being made on the mound by All-American Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) to dramatic homeruns by Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) and Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport).

The spotlight shown on Lister in game one as the senior standout was going for her 100th career win and her 1000th career strikeout. In the second inning, Lister recorded her second strikeout of the game and her 1000th all-time, achieving a milestone of college pitching greatness. She finished the game with ten strikeouts, moving Lister into fourth on the all-time Division III strikeout list and needing only 18 more strikeouts for third all-time.

But, Lister had another, possibly more meaningful, goal in mind as she battled the Cardinals. The Sea Gull offense gave Lister plenty of run support to accomplish her second amazing feat of the day, 100 career victories. With her 100th win, Lister stands in fourth place and climbing on the all-time Division III victories list. Putting it into perspective, Lister won 27 games her freshman year, 31 her sophomore year, 32 her junior campaign and ten so far this season. Lister wins almost 90% of the games she starts.

Giving Lister a big cushion for her 100th win, Erin Ruest went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs. It was her fifth inning walk-off homerun to center field that sealed the victory as the Sea Gulls enforced the mercy rule with their 11-2 lead. Meaghan O’Gara had three hits and three runs for Salisbury who also received strong performances from Jodie Lehrer (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) with three hits and Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) adding a two-run double. Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) hit her first homer this season with a solo shot in the third.

In game two, the excitement dampened with Catholic holding a one-run lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Sea Gulls would mount a rally to bury the Cardinals and secure the tenth win of the season for starter Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston). With six hits, Salisbury pushed across eight runs to grab a 9-2 advantage. The big blow came from the bat of Meaghan O’Gara as the freshman delivered a one-out grand slam. Ruest and Dronenburg added three hits apiece for the Gulls. Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) were solid with the bat in both games, and Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) came off the bench for a big pinch-hit RBI.

The Sea Gulls travel to Washington College for a pair of games on Thursday, April 6.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Salisbury softball team split a doubleheader, losing game one, 5-2, and winning game two, 8-0, against the Eagles of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. With the split, the team stands at 19-5 on the season, 3-1 in the conference. Salisbury starter Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) starred on the mound for Salisbury in game two, recording a five-inning shutout, giving up four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts to earn the win.

In game one, Salisbury starter Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline), looking for her 100th victory in her career, gave up five runs, three earned on five hits while walking six in six innings of work to take the loss. Lister did strike out 11 batters, which puts her two strikeouts away from 1,000 in her Salisbury career. Mary Washington starter Abbey Wineland pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking five and striking out two to earn the win.

Mary Washington opened the scoring in game one in the bottom of the third inning as the Eagles scored three runs on two hits, highlighted by a three-run double by designated hitter Catherine Hull. The Eagles added two more in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. Lister walked right fielder Kerri Spaulding to start the inning and second baseman Lindsey Painter reached on an error by Salisbury third baseman Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) on an attempted sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Sarah Axelson, reached on a fielders choice and Jamie Clevenger knocked in Spaulding with a single. The second run was scored on a single by Eagles’ third baseman Ashley Sifer.

Salisbury scored single runs in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, center fielder Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond) walked with two outs and came around to score on a single by Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key). In the sixth, Schrader was credited with an RBI on a bases loaded walk for Salisbury’s two runs.

Salisbury Sweeps Doubleheader, 9-0 and 8-5, Against McDaniel
March 29, 2006

SALISBURY-MCDANIEL BOXES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Salisbury softball team, recently ranked No. 13 in the nation, swept a doubleheader from the Green Terror of McDaniel College Wednesday afternoon with scores of 9-0 and 8-5. Pitcher Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) pitched a complete game shut out in game one, giving up only one hit while striking out 10 to earn her ninth win of the season against only one defeat.

In game one, Salisbury scored one run in the first, one run in the second, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh for nine runs on the day. The Sea Gulls also had 16 hits on the day, led by Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough), who went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Designated hitter Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) went 2-for-5 at the plate, including an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run double in the seventh.

Opposing pitcher Mary Abrams collected the only hit for McDaniel against Lister. On the mound, Abrams surrendered nine runs, eight earned on 16 hits while walking three and striking out two.

In game two, Salisbury used home run power to storm to a big early lead, 6-0, after three innings. The big inning was the second for the Sea Gulls, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Ruest. Right fielder Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) added two solo home runs on the day, one in the third and one in the seventh. The Sea Gulls finished the contest with eight runs on nine hits.

McDaniel third baseman Megan Mitchell had a big game in game two, going 3-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs and driving in four, including a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-5 in favor of Salisbury. McDaniel, however, would come up short, scoring five runs on the day on nine hits.

Wells started the second game for Salisbury and earned her eighth win of the season, pitching five and a third innings, surrendering five runs, four earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out three. Lister came on in relief to earn her first save of the season, pitching the final one and two thirds innings, giving up one hit and striking out four.

McDaniel starter Nichol Moeller took the loss, surrendering seven runs, four earned while giving up six hits and four walks while striking out one in two innings of work. Jessica Smith relieved Moeller in the third and pitched five innings, giving up one earned run on three hits, walking one and striking out one.

Following today’s sweep, the softball team improves their record to 18-4 on the season. The team looks to continue its winning streak Saturday as they travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on the University of Mary Washington in conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The team returns home next Tuesday, April 4, to host Catholic University at 2:30 p.m.

Sea Gulls Drop Doubleheader to TCNJ, 2-1 and 4-2
March 26, 2006

SALISBURY-TCNJ BOXES: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

SALISBURY, Md. - The Sea Gulls suffered a pair of losses at the hands of The College of New Jersey to fall to 16-4 on the season. The Lions improved to 9-5 with the double-header sweep. TCNJ used solid pitching and timely hitting to stifle the #2 Sea Gulls, 2-1 in the first game and 4-2 in the second contest.

In the first game, a Carlyn Perrotty homer proved to be the game winner. With TCNJ leading 1-0, Perrotty hit a solo home run to start the fourth and give the Lions a 2-0 advantage. Salisbury would get one back in the bottom of the fourth from a Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) lead-off double and a Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) RBI single. However, the Sea Gulls struggled to string together their hits in both games, failing to find that one big inning that SU normally uses to put its opponents away.

The Sea Gulls tried to mount a comeback in the seventh, putting two on with only one out. But TCNJ relief pitcher, Jessica Kohut would thwart the rally. Kohut pitched two and a third innings without allowing a hit and striking out four Sea Gulls to earn the save. Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) took the loss (8-1), her first of the year, allowing only one earned run and striking out nine over seven strong innings.

In the second game, the story unfolded in a similar manner as the first. The first TCNJ runs were unearned from a couple Sea Gull errors and wild pitches, and the Salisbury offense could not find the big inning. Two solo home runs accounted for all of the Sea Gull scoring. The first, a Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) blast to dead center pulled SU within a run at 2-1 in the third. The second homer was a mammoth shot off the bat of Meaghan O’Gara (East Northport, NY/Northport) that cleared the left field fence and nearly reached South Division Street. Despite the power display, Salisbury could not push enough base runners across the plate against the Lions starter, Heather Hoffman (4-1).

Vicki Blevins led the Lions in game two with two hits and two RBI. Christina Lizzi delivered a big RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to give TCNJ an insurance run. Salisbury would again threaten in the bottom of the seventh, but Kohut shut the door once more and picked up her second save of the day. Wells (7-3) suffered the loss for the Sea Gulls, allowing three runs, one earned, over four and two-thirds.

Salisbury looks to bounce back against McDaniel College on Wednesday as the Sea Gulls head to Westminster, Maryland.

Sea Gulls Top Capital, 5-1, to Finish Tournament 3-1
March 18, 2006

SALISBURY-CAPITAL BOXSCORE

SALISBURY, Md. - The Sea Gulls faced Capital in the finale of the two-day Salisbury Tournament. Much like the first meeting, the Sea Gulls controlled the game and won, 5-1, to improve to 16-2 on the season. The Crusaders dropped their fourth straight to fall to 8-6.

The Sea Gulls, like in game one, finished with nine hits and five runs. The Sea Gulls were glad to have Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) back from injury as the third baseman went 2-3 with a run to pace the offense.  Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) contributed with two hits and two RBI, and starting pitcher Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) had a big two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to give Salisbury a four run cushion.

Wells got the win on the mound for Salisbury, tallying her seventh victory of the year. She fanned nine Crusaders without allowing a walk in six innings of work. The Sea Gull defense was solid again, making several nice plays behind Wells. They limited Capital to just three hits and one run. Andrea Kringle had a hit and the lone Crusader run in the top of the fifth. Jen Heidenreich took the loss, dropping to 3-4.

Brittany Sullivan (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) played well off the bench for Salisbury. Sullivan had a hit, a run, a walk and a stolen base.

The Sea Gulls return to action Sunday, March 26 when they face the College of New Jersey at home.

Sea Gulls Drop No. 5-ranked Ithaca in Morning Game, 5-2
March 18, 2006

SALISBURY-ITHACA BOXSCORE

SALISBURY, Md. - What a difference a day makes. After dropping a 1-0 decision to the Bombers yesterday, piling up four errors, the Sea Gulls turned the tables on Ithaca, 5-2, to improve to 15-2 overall. On this day, the Bombers struggled on defense, committing four errors on their way to falling to 12-2 on the season.

Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits. Lister also struck out eight batters and allowed six walks. The defense behind Lister was strong as the Sea Gulls consistently held the Bombers from scoring, despite numerous opportunities. Catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) was solid defensively as she kept the ball in front of her and blocked the plate to record a big out in the bottom of the second.

Salisbury also left several on base, but they managed to take advantage of wild pitches and Bomber errors. Sea Gulls scored twice on wild pitches in the top of the sixth, and Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) delivered a huge two-out RBI single in that same inning to fuel the offense. Dronenburg, Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) and Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) each had multi-hit games for Salisbury.

Ithaca hurt themselves by leaving 12 runners and failing to get the clutch hit. Amanda Illinger led the Bombers with two hits and an RBI, but Ithaca could not get that same production across the board. Nicole Cade took the loss for Ithaca, entering a tie game in the sixth for Bomber starter, Carly Myers. Each Bomber pitcher was erratic at times, and Ithaca chose to intentionally walk Sea Gull slugger Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) three times. But unlike yesterday, the Sea Gull offense and defense responded to the challenge.

Salisbury would face Capital in the final match-up of day two, hoping to notch a 3-1 record for the tournament.

Sea Gulls Fall to No. 5-ranked Ithaca, 1-0
March 17, 2006

SALISBURY-ITHACA BOXSCORE

SALISBURY, MD - The fifth ranked Bombers of Ithaca College handed the second ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls their second loss of the season, 1-0, Friday afternoon in game three of the Sea Gull Tournament.  Jessica Stangarone singled and scored the lone run of the game in the top half of the fifth inning to lift Ithaca over the Sea Gulls.

Bomber starting pitcher, Nicole Cade, went all seven innings, striking out eight Gulls and earning her fifth win of the season.  Salisbury’s Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) went seven solid innings, giving up one unearned run and scattering eight hits on the afternoon.  The loss drops Wells to 6-2 on the season.

The first four innings of the game was a pitchers duel between Cade and Wells.  Cade gave up only two hits to Salisbury, while Wells only allowed six hits.  Ithaca broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with one run.  Stangarone opened the inning with a single to right field, and advanced to second on an error.  She was then bunted over by third basemen Amanda Illinger.  After a Stacy Bartels ground out, Hannah Shalett reached first when her ground ball found its way through the legs of Salisbury second basemen Nichole Fuoqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) scoring Stangarone.

Salisbury threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to capitalize.  Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) led the inning off with a double down the left field line.  First basemen Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) was intentionally walked, and catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  However, Cade was able to strike out the next two Sea Gull batters to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Bombers finished the game with eight hits and no errors, while Salisbury managed only four hits and committed four errors in the field.

In the two early games of the day, Ithaca and Salisbury both defeated Capital 8-0 and 6-1 respectively.  Action resumes Saturday, March 18 at 9 am when Ithaca and Capital face-off.  The Sea Gulls are scheduled to play at 11 am and 1 pm.

Salisbury Drops Capital, 6-1, in Game One of Sea Gull Invitational
March 17, 2006

SALISBURY-CAPITAL BOXSCORE

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University softball team (13-1) defeated Capital University 6-1 in their first game of the Sea Gull Softball Tournament Friday at Sea Gull field. Senior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) picked up her seventh win of the year, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out nine batters and giving up only two hits.

Senior shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) led off the game with a walk and was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond). Senior first basemen Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) singled to put runners at the corners. Shaffer scored two pitches later on a wild pitch to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead.

The Sea Gulls increased the lead in the second when freshmen Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) ripped a single up the middle scoring Lister from third. The run was set up by an error that allowed Lister to reach base with no out. Kurisha Hoffman (Lutherville, MD/Towson) sacrificed Lister putting her into scoring position.

Lister started another scoring spree when she singled to lead off the top of the fourth. Shaffer put Salisbury up 3-0 when she hit a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner Cindy Daub (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay). The scoring didn’t end there because Ruest stepped up to the plate and delivered a two out two run single to center putting the Sea Gulls up 5-0.

The final run was tallied for Salisbury in the seventh when Hoffman doubled off the right field fence bringing Lister all the way around from first to score.

Sophomore Kortni Pedlow (Elkton, MD/St. Mark’s) saw an inning on the mound, giving up one run on one hit while recording one strike out. Freshman Stacy Davis (Westminster, MD/Westminster) pitched a perfect seventh with one strikeout.

Ruest continued her hot start to the season going three for three with two RBIs. The senior leads the team in average, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, walks, and on base percentage. Ruest has yet to go hitless in a game this season.

The Sea Gulls will take on Ithaca in the second game of the invitational later in the afternoon.

Sea Gulls Sweep Captains of Christopher Newport, 3-1 and 3-0
March 14, 2006

SU VS. CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

SALISBURY, Md. - In a showdown of unbeaten teams from the Sea Gull Invitational Softball Tournament last weekend, Salisbury University (13-1) swept Christopher Newport University in a doubleheader 3-1 and 3-0 Tuesday at Sea Gull Field. Senior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) picked up the win in the first game while sophomore Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) pitched a complete game shutout in game two.

The Sea Gulls got on the board in the home half of the second when sophomore Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond) reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lister. Then junior second baseman Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) drove Schrader home with an RBI double giving Salisbury the lead.

The Sea Gulls scored in an unconventional way in the third inning when Wells struck out swinging but ran to first because the catcher dropped the ball and senior shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) wasted little time running home, beating the throw and putting SU up 2-0.

Lister got into some trouble when the bases were loaded after a walk with two outs in the fourth inning, but she battled her way out by striking the next batter for the third out.   CNU had many opportunities to cut into the lead but left 12 runners on base in the first game.

CNU scored there first run in the fifth after a double to the left field gap. Lister got out of the jam when she struck out two of the last three batters to end the threat. The Sea Gulls took to the air, striking back quick in the bottom of the fifth when freshmen Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) smoked a solo homer to center putting Salisbury back up by two. “It felt good coming off the bat,” said Malarkey. “I was just trying to make good contact and I hit it solid.” The homer was Malarkey’s second of the season.

After giving up two singles in the seventh, Lister gave way to Wells with one out.  CNU loaded the bases after an error with the go-ahead run on first base. Salisbury’s defense stepped up again when Fuqua fielded a ground ball and threw to junior catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) for the force out at home. Wells did the rest by striking out the next batter to end the game.

Salisbury started fast in game two scoring two runs in the first inning. Wells doubled of the center field fence bringing home senior first basemen Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough). Wells scored from second on an infield single by Dronenburg. With two outs, Wells was running hard on the crack of the bat and when the CNU fielder dove to stop the ball, Wells kept on going and beat the throw at home with a hook slide.

Wells pitched a great game, never allowing a runner to get past second base the entire game. She finished with three strikeouts and scattered four hits in the outing. Salisbury scored its final run of the game when Ruest hit a laser down the left field line for her fifth home run of the year. The Sea Gulls ended the game with another great defensive play, a 6-4-3 double play from Shaffer to Fuqua and over to Ruest at first.

Lister and Wells both picked up their sixth win of the year with Lister at 6-0 and Wells at 6-1. Lister pitched six and a third giving up six hits, walking four and striking out 11 batters.

Salisbury next plays when they host the Sea Gull Tournament Friday and Saturday March 17th and 18th.

Salisbury Takes a Pair of Games from Allegheny, 7-4 and 5-0
March 12, 2006

SU VS. ALLEGHENY: GAME ONE | GAME TWO

SALISBURY, Md. – The #2 ranked Salisbury Softball team was back in action Sunday afternoon as they bested the Gators of Allegheny College 7-4 in game one and 5-0 in game two. The Sea Gulls improved their record to 11-1, 6-0 over the last three days, by taking both games from the Gators who drop to 2-4 overall.

In game one, Salisbury threw Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston). Wells scattered five hits in six innings to get the win and move to 5-1 on the season. Kortni Pedlow (Elkton, MD/St. Mark’s) finished off the Gators in the seventh, striking out two.

The usual suspects for Salisbury were relatively quiet with the bats in game one. The first six hitters in the Sea Gull lineup went a combined 3 for 18, but the 7-9 spots collected five hits, four RBI and five runs in only eight combined at bats. Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI, Whitney Schrader (Columbia, MD/Hammond) went 2-3 with two runs, and Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) added a big two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to give Salisbury some much needed insurance runs. The Gators were plagued by errors as three of the Salisbury runs were unearned. At the plate, Abby Bodenlos paced the Gators with two hits, two runs and an RBI.

In game two, the bats in the heart of the Salisbury lineup came through. Kirsten Wells and Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) each had a hit and RBI as the Sea Gulls scored at least one run in four different innings. Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) blasted her fourth homer of the season with a solo shot into left center in the sixth. Ruest explained, “Everyone tries to pitch me outside, so most of my home runs are opposite field.”

Ruest wasn’t sure she got enough of the pitch to go out, saying that she thought it was too high, but the towering shot sailed cleanly over the 216 sign in left.

Freshman, Stacy Davis (Westminster, MD/Westminster) pitched 4.2 to notch her first win and Wells finished up the game to get the save and the combined shutout. Errors hurt the Gators again, committing three in game two. Giannina Coccaro took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season, but she pitched solid, limiting a good Sea Gull offense to just three earned runs over six innings.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Tuesday to face Christopher Newport. CNU finished the Sea Gull Invitational 4-0, and the Captains will look to stay perfect in Salisbury as they battle the Gulls.

Lister Pitches 14 Innings as Sea Gulls Sweep Invitational Opponents
March 11, 2006

SU-MORAVIAN BOX | SU-LYNCHBURG BOX

The Salisbury University softball team (9-1) finished the Sea Gull Invitational with two victories after outstanding pitching performances from senior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) Saturday at the Henry Parker Athletic Complex beating Moravian 2-0 and Lynchburg 6-0.

Lister pitched two complete game shutouts, while only giving up six total hits and sticking out 14 batters on the day. “Lacey was ready to pitch today and she pitched great,” said Coach Margie Knight. “She just keeps fighting out there and when they got some runners on she dug down deep to get some key outs.” Lister improved her record to 5-0 for the season.

In the first game against Moravian, senior shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) got the Sea Gulls on the board when she crushed a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the third. “She smoked that ball to left,” said Knight. Moravian did not get a runner past second base as Lister was aided by a stout defensive performance. “We got the win because the defense was right there backing me up all game,” said Lister.

Salisbury added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) singled home sophomore outfielder Ashley Stem (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) giving the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead.

Against Lynchburg, Salisbury picked up where they left off scoring in the top of the first. Shaffer leadoff the game with a single. Stem moved her over with one of her three sacrifice bunts on the day. Then senior Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) drove a single to center scoring Shaffer from second giving the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead.

After a leadoff single in the bottom of the third, the defense stepped up again when Ruest caught a bunt attempt in the air, then doubling off the runner at first. “Lynchburg had the top of the order up and Erin made a huge play having the awareness to get the runner at first for the double play,” said Knight.

Lynchburg threatened in the bottom of the sixth after a one out walk. Lister made a diving try on a bunt attempt but could not hang on putting runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Lister wasted little time though, striking out the batter on four pitches for the final out of the inning preserving the 1-0 lead.

The bats came alive in the seventh for Salisbury when they recorded a five-run inning to extend the lead to 6-0. With runners on first and second, Shaffer continued her clutch hitting connecting on an RBI ground rule double to center putting SU up 2-0. Ruest smoked a single to left scoring both junior Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Shaffer. Junior catcher Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) capped the scoring when she ripped a two run double in the left field gap bring home Ruset and Wells.

Dronenburg went three for four in game two with two doubles and two RBIs. Ruset had four hits and three RBIs total in both games. Shaffer added four hits, scoring three runs and two RBIs on the afternoon. Wells had two hits in both games and sophomore Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) collected a hit on the day.

Salisbury and Christopher Newport University finished the tournament at 4-0. Other results for the day are Moravian over Lynchburg 4-3… Kings over VA Wesleyan 8-4… Allegheny over Cabrini 4-0… Christopher Newport over Oneonta 9-1… York over Kings 8-3… Wilkes over Cabrini 9-4… Washington College over Oneonta 9-1… VA Wesleyan over York 7-1… Christopher Newport over Washington College 4-1.

Salisbury plays Allegheny in a doubleheader Sunday at Sea Gull Field with the first pitch coming around 11am.

Sea Gulls Open Invitational With a Pair of Wins, 8-1, and 8-3
March 10, 2006

SU-CABRINI BOX | SU-ONEONTA BOX

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury cruised to a couple of wins on the first day of the Sea Gull Invitational held at the Henry Parker Athletic Complex. SU defeated Cabrini, 8-1 and downed Oneonta, 8-3 to improve its record to 7-1.

Versus Cabrini in the opener, Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) gave up a lone run on two hits in the first inning. After that, the Cavaliers would not manage a hit or run the rest of the game. Lister, now 3-0 on the season, went on to strikeout 14 Cavs without allowing a base on balls.

The bottom part of the Sea Gull lineup provided much of the run support. Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) went 3-4 with a run, and Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) scored once and drove in two with three hits of her own. The Sea Gulls also did the little things well against Cabrini College. Three sacrifice bunts, two sacrifice flies and no errors displayed the Salisbury discipline. The Cavaliers committed three errors behind Bernadette Dolan who took the loss. Megan O’Brien had the lone RBI for the Cavs.

In game two, Salisbury battled the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta (5-4) who defeated Cabrini earlier in the day. Oneonta only allowed Salisbury to score in one inning, but in that inning, the Sea Gulls would send eight runs across the dish. In the bottom of the second, the big blow came off the bat of Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) in the form of a grand slam homerun. SU also took advantage of Oneonta’s three errors in the inning as they sent 13 batters to the plate. Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) actually scored twice in the same half inning.

Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and Kortni Pedlow (Elkton, MD/St. Mark’s) held the Red Dragon bats in check for most of the game. Wells got the win and improved to 4-1 on the year while Pedlow pitched three strong innings of relief, giving up only one run. Freshman Katie Eyring had a bases loaded single and two RBI to lead the Dragons.

Salisbury will take on a tough Moravian squad along with Lynchburg in tomorrow’s action. Results from Day One of the Sea Gull Invitational are as follows:

Oneonta 3 vs. Cabrini 2...Moravian 5 vs. Washington College 0...Virginia Wesleyan 11 vs. Washington College 0...Virginia Wesleyan 5 vs. Moravian 4...Christopher Newport 8 vs. King’s 7...King’s 5 vs. Allegheny 0...Christopher Newport 8 vs. Allegheny 1...Lynchburg 4 vs. York 3...Lynchburg 4 vs. Wilkes 2...Wilkes 3 vs. York 0.

Senior Lister Named CAC Softball Athlete of the Week

Salisbury Downs Emory, 7-4, Drops Finale to Plattsburgh, 5-4
March 4, 2006

SU-EMORY BOX | SU-PLATTSBURGH BOX

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Sea Gulls (5-1) ran their win streak to five in a row by beating #11 Emory University, 7-4, but the Gulls were handed a 5-4 setback from SUNY Plattsburgh in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament finale. Playing four games in two days and fighting through sickness, the Sea Gulls summoned their remaining energy to battle hard in both day two games.

Versus Emory, the Sea Gulls fell behind early when the Eagles scored three runs off Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) in three innings. But in the bottom of the third, Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) would flex her muscle and give Salisbury the lead. With the bases loaded, Ruest hit a grand slam to put Salisbury up 4-3. Ruest, in 14 plate appearances over the four games, reached base 12 times, hit three home runs and established herself as a fearsome hitter in the Sea Gull lineup.

Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) came on in relief for Lister and got out of a big third inning jam. Wells also collected two hits and an RBI at the plate. Meaghan Murphy (Laurel, MD/Atholton) came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give Salisbury a 6-3 lead. On the mound, Wells made the lead stick as she went five innings, allowing only one run on four hits to improve to 3-0 on the season.

In game two, Plattsburgh ran out to a 2-0 lead due to some timely hitting. In the fourth inning, Salisbury got one run back on a Murphy RBI single, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on three hits. Uncharacteristic defensive miscues by the Sea Gulls helped in the Cardinal rally. Even down 5-1 after four innings, Salisbury refused to quit. Ruest singled in Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) to draw the Gulls a run closer, but Salisbury still trailed 5-2 going into the seventh and final inning. Down to their last out, Ruest blasted a two-run homer to narrow the gap to only one run. But Cardinal starter, Jaclyn Leitze, closed the door and handed the Sea Gulls their first defeat of the season.

Wells and Lister each threw three innings and allowed two earned runs in the loss. Wells gave up four hits and took the loss. Lister, despite striking out seven, gave up four walks and three runs.

A rested Salisbury University squad will host the 12-team Sea Gull Invitational this weekend. The games will begin at 9:00 am on Friday, March 10.

Lister Pitches Perfect Game Against Guilford, 8-0
March 3, 2006

SU-GUILFORD BOX | SU-FROSTBURG BOX

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Salisbury University Softball improved to 4-0 behind two shutout wins at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. #2 Salisbury downed Guilford College, 8-0, and then handed Frostburg a 3-0 loss.

Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) stole the show in the first game as the senior hurler tossed a perfect game. Lister struck out 12 of 18 batters, allowing no hits or walks. No Guilford College player reached first base in the six inning contest. Lister’s record goes to 2-0, and in those two games, she has allowed only one hit.

Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) paced the Sea Gull offense with a 3-3 performance at the dish. Nicole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) went 2-2 with an RBI, and Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) knocked in three runs while going 2-3. Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) put the exclamation point on the game one victory with sixth inning home run.

In game two, Kirsten Wells throw a complete game shutout, scattering five hits and striking out four. Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) sparked the Sea Gull effort with a first inning homer that plated two. With one swing, Ruest provided all the run support Wells and the Sea Gull defense would need. Tee Dronenburg (Columbia, MD/Howard) knocked in Ruest with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning for insurance, and Salisbury finished off Frostburg, 3-0.

After the impressive day one wins, Salisbury set its sights on a day two showdown against #11 Emory University. The Sea Gulls would also place SUNY Plattsburgh in the final game of the tournament.

Salisbury Softball Sweeps Gallaudet, 10-0 and 13-0, to Open Season
February 25, 2006

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Salisbury University Softball (2-0), the #2 team in the nation, took two games from Gallaudet over the weekend. Game one finished in five innings, 10-0, and game two ended 13-0 after five innings, as well. Salisbury pitching held the Bison to just two hits over the ten innings played.

Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) starred on the mound and with the bat in game one. Lister struck out 15 out of 18 batters she faced, allowing only one hit and two walks. The Bison did not get on base until deep in the fourth inning. Lister helped her cause with the bat by going 2-3 with three RBI. The big blow came in the top of the first when Lister doubled with the bases loaded. Other offensive leaders were Nicole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) who went 2-3 with two RBI and Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) who went 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Salisbury batters did not strike out once and Sea Gull fielders committed no errors to cap a fine opening-game performance.

In game two of the double-header, Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston) picked up where Lister left off. Wells fanned five and allowed only one hit and one walk. Again, the Salisbury starter provided a big hit as Wells singled in two runs in the top of the first. Shaffer, Salisbury’s talented lead-off hitter, had another big game at the plate where she went 4-4, including a home run, with three runs scored and five RBI. Fuqua also had an outstanding second game as the Sea Gull second baseman had a home run to go along with three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base. Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) gathered four hits in six at bats over the two games to be among the Sea Gulls leaders in batting average.

Salisbury’s solid defense committed no errors behind the pitching of Wells. The lone Bison hit in the second game came off the bat of Caitlin Mosholder, but the Sea Gull defense quickly turned a double-play to erase the threat.

The softball team heads to Virginia Beach to play in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on March 3-4, and the Sea Gull Invitational Tournament, featuring 12 top teams, is scheduled for March 10-11.

Salisbury Softball Opens Season No. 2 in Preseason Poll (PREVIEW)
February 23, 2006

2006 ROSTER | 2006 SCHEDULE | 2005 FINAL STATISTICS

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University Softball is one of the most successful programs in Division III. Finishing second in 2003, third in 2004 and second again in 2005, the only thing to elude the Sea Gulls is the National Championship, but this season may provide the cherry on top for Coach Margie Knight.

Knight believes the upcoming season will be full of worthy opponents both in and out of the Capital Athletic Conference. In the CAC, Knight says, "York should be very good, along with Catholic, Gallaudet and Mary Washington."

The Salisbury non-conference schedule may be even more demanding. SU hosts two tournaments that feature an abundance of top teams. The Sea Gull Invitational is a 12 team tournament that includes #17 Moravian, Christopher Newport, Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan. A week later, the Sea Gull Softball Tournament welcomes #5 Ithaca, among others.

The ace of the Sea Gulls staff, Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline), returns for her senior season. Her career at Salisbury has been nothing short of spectacular. Among her accomplishments, Lister has garnered second team All-American and CAC Player of the Year honors. Lister is the Salisbury all-time wins leader with 90 and the all-time strikeouts leader with 868. She, along with Kirsten Wells (Fallston, MD/Fallston), will be counted on to take the mound for the Sea Gulls in big games. Wells looks to build on her impressive freshman season when she went 12-2 with a dazzling 0.98 ERA.

If opponents manage to hit Salisbury pitching, now they must contend with a stellar Sea Gull defense. At second base, Nicole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) had only two errors in 50 games all of last season. On the left side of the diamond, shortstop Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) batted .293 to go along with her solid defense. Knight praises, "Our infield defense is top notch."

An infielder that will be counted on to produce big offensive numbers is Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough). She was selected to the all-tournament team last season for her play in the postseason, and Ruest also posted gaudy regular season numbers by hitting .395 with seven homers and 43 RBI.

While Salisbury returns only one starter in the outfield, the overall character of the 2006 team is undeniable. The Sea Gulls have a list of 17 goals to achieve during the year. The goals range from "being responsible" to "maintaining a team GPA of 3.36 or better" to "having a fielding percentage above .966." To say the least, the Gulls are focused. Coach Knight sums up the SU softball attitude with her team’s motto for success, "Every play, every day."
