Salisbury Athletics Finish in
Top 25 Sea Gulls rank 24th in final Directors' Cup Standings... SALISBURY, Md. (6/27/06) -
For the fourth consecutive year, the Salisbury University athletics
program has ranked in the top 25 in the U.S. Sports Academy Director’s
Cup The award is presented annually to the nation’s best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. Schools acquire points based on their success in NCAA post-season play for all sports. Salisbury was the top ranked school in the Capital Athletic Conference and the state of Maryland.
Of the11 years that the Directors’ Cup award has been presented, Salisbury has finished no lower than 54th among the 430 schools that comprise the NCAA’s Division III ranks. Previous Sea Gull finishes were: 51st (1996); 25th (1997); 45th (1998); 34th (1999); 18th (2000); 15th (2001); 54th (2002); 18th (2003); 12th (2004); and 11th (2005).
The Sea Gulls top finishes this season are highlighted by the Field Hockey teams third straight National Championship, a second place finish by the Men’s Lacrosse team, a fifth place finish by the Women’s Lacrosse team, a 14th place finish in Men's Soccer, a 25th place finish by the Baseball team and a 26th place finish by the Softball team.
This year, Williams (Mass.) College won the Directors’ Cup with 920.5 points, followed by The College of New Jersey with 790.25 points. Rounding out the top five was Middlebury (Vt.) College, Emory (Ga.) College, and Cortland State (N.Y.).
Each year, the Directors' Cup program, sponsored by NACDA and the United States Sports Academy, awards trophies to the top athletics programs in NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA. The Directors' Cup program is the only all‑sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program.
