Petrecca, Mister Named to All-CAC Teams

ALL-CAC VOLLEYBALL TEAMS | PETRECCA PROFILE | MISTER PROFILE
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury volleyball team, following at 26-10 season, had two athletes named to all-conference squads, the CAC released on Tuesday.  Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) (left) was named to the first team, while senior captain Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) (right) was named to the second team. 

Petrecca finished the season with 151 kills, fifth on the team and led the Sea Gulls with 1283 assists. She also led the Gulls in service aces with 67. She finished the season with 175 career service aces to move into fifth on Salisbury’s career service aces leaders.  

Defensively, Petrecca was second on the team with 392 digs. She now has 1,147 career digs, moving her to sixth on Salisbury’s career digs leaders. 

Mister finished the season with 367 kills to lead the Gulls offensively. She surpassed 1,000 career kills in the second game of the season and finishes her Salisbury career with 1,352 career kills, finishing second on Salisbury’s career list in kills, behind Donna Hudson (1997-00).  

Mister also finished the season with 50 service aces. She finishes her Salisbury career with 252 service aces, moving her to third on Salisbury’s career leaders in that category. 

Defensively, Mister recorded 479 digs to lead the Sea Gulls defensively. She finishes her Salisbury career with 1,769 career digs, moving her up to second place in Salisbury’s career digs leaders behind Kara Kowalski (1998-01). 

Gallaudet’s Charity Sanders won Player of the Year, while her coach, Lynn Ray Boren was named Coach of the Year. St. Mary’s Rebecca Tursell was named Rookie of the Year.

Sea Gull Volleyball Eliminated by Marymount, 3-0
November 3, 2005

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University women’s volleyball team advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship game for only the second time in the school’s history and eliminated the defending league champions from Salisbury University with a 3-0 victory in the CAC semi-final match Thursday night in the Verizon Sports Arena. The Saints last appeared in the CAC title game in 1993. The game scores were 30-28, 30-21, 30-28.

This was the rubber match for the two teams who had met twice earlier this season. Salisbury defeated the Saints on September 3 at the Johns Hopkins tournament, 3-1, while MU won the conference match on October 20 at Salisbury, 3-2.

The Saints came in as the #2 seed while Salisbury was the #3 seed and the scores were indicative of the accuracy of the seeding. Marymount went up 17-9 in the first game only to see the Seagulls tie the game at 24 before falling 30-28.

The second game was a little easier for the Saints as they took control of the game and 19-12 and ended up winning 30-21. But the real battle was in the third game when MU went up 10-5, before falling behind 13-14. The game was tied at 20-20 and the Saints took their final time out down 26-27. But they forced the sideout and then senior Kelly Seymour served top the Saints up 29-27 and MU won, 30-28.

Seymour led the team with 12 kills. Julia Ralston recorded 20 digs in the match. Bea Livioco handed off 43 assists. Lauren Gay provided 11 kills and 15 digs.

Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) led the Seagulls with 10 kills, 25 assists and six digs. Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added 11 digs and nine kills and Allison Wine (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) recorded 10 kills and seven blocks.

Salisbury ends it season with a 26-10 record. The Saints improve to 21-9 and advance to the CAC Championship on Saturday at Gallaudet. Marymount lost to the Bison on October 12, 3-1. The time of the match will be determined on Friday.

SU Volleyball Advances to CAC Semifinals, 3-0

SALISBURY, Md. - Senior Brittany Mister recorded 12 kills and 12 digs and junior Abbey Petrecca added 33 assists, four kills and 10 digs Tuesday night as the Salisbury University volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 victory over York College (13-20) at the Maggs Physical Activities Center. Game scores were 30-18, 30-26 and 30-25.

The defending CAC champion Sea Gulls (26-9) won their third straight match and fifth in the last six tries. No.3-seed SU will advance to the semifinals for the fourth straight year when the Gulls travel to Arlington, Va. on Thursday to take on No.2-seed Marymount University (20-9) at 7 p.m. Marymount outlasted St. Mary’s College, 30-28, 23-30, 30-17, 30-24. No.1-seed Gallaudet University will host No.4-seed Mary Washington at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the other semi-final.

The last time Salisbury and York played it was the Spartans taking a 3-0 victory at home during the CAC regular season. The Sea Gulls played like a completely different team this time around as SU recorded 43 kills, compared to 32 for York. Salisbury held a 39-26 advantage in assists, a 9-3 advantage in service aces and a 9-8 advantage in blocks.

In addition to Mister’s numbers, senior Lindsay Lawson added eight kills, five assists and five digs, senior Allison Wine recorded seven kills, three digs and three assisted blocks and freshman Stacey Krebs chipped in eight kills and one dig.

Senior outside hitter Brandy Overlander led the Spartans with 11 digs, freshman Grace Acker contributed eight kills and six digs, sophomore Katie Hertz accumulated 24 assists, 16 digs and four kills, and senior Jillian Zambori had nine digs.

After recording a 30-18 victory in game one, the second game was nip and tuck the entire way. Salisbury held a 9-6 lead early, but a 13-5 run by York gave the Spartans a 19-14 advantage. SU continued to inch back into the match and finally drew even, 25-25. That was as close as the Spartans would come as the Gulls scored the next three points en route to the win.

The third game was even most of the way as well. The score was tied seven times before the two teams drew even at 13-13. Salisbury quickly built the lead to 18-14 and held one of its biggest leads, 24-19. But the Spartans closed to within 24-23 and appeared to have momentum on their side. The Sea Gulls then went on a 6-2 run the rest of the way to put the game away.

Salisbury Volleyball Sweeps Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0

SALISBURY-VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE GAME STATS
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury volleyball team closed the 2005 regular season campaign strong Saturday, defeated Virginia Wesleyan College, 3-0. The team played the Marlins tough, and edged them with scores of 30-24, 30-22, and 30-26. 

Salisbury’s attack was led by seniors Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) and Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert). Lawson has 12 kills and two service aces, while Mister had 10 kills and one service ace. Freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldgersburg, MD/Liberty) contributed seven kills. Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) set up the Sea Gulls all afternoon, contributing 30 assists and five kills.

Defensively, Mister led the Sea Gulls with 21 digs, followed by freshman Jaime Marzocchi (Harrington Park, NJ/Old Tappan) with 17, senior Lou Ward (Clinton, MD/Gwynn Park) with 11, and Lawson and Petrecca with nine digs apiece. 

The victory extended the Sea Gulls’ record to 25-9 on the regular season. The team enters the CAC volleyball tournament as the No. 3 seed. They will open the first round against number six seed York Tuesday at the Maggs Physical Athletics Center at 7:00 p.m. The Spartans (13-19, 3-4 in CAC) were defeated by Mary Washington, 3-1 on Saturday.

Salisbury Volleyball Claims #3 Seed in Upcoming CAC Tourney

SALISBURY-ST. MARY'S STATISTICS
ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball snapped its two-match losing skid against league competition Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over St. Mary’s College in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup in St. Mary’s City. The game scores were 30-27, 30-24, 27-30, 30-24.

The win, however, did not change the seedings for the upcoming CAC tournament, which begins Nov. 1. Gallaudet University defeated Goucher College (4-27, 0-7), 3-0, and Marymount blanked Catholic University, 3-0, to remain in a first-place tie after the regular season. Gallaudet (17-11, 6-1) will take the No.1 seed into the CAC tournament by virtue of the tie-breaker. Marymount (17-9, 6-1) owns the No.2 seed and Salisbury (24-9, 5-2) is the No.3 seed. Salisbury will host a quarterfinal match next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Salisbury will close out the regular season Saturday when the Sea Gulls travel to Virginia Beach, Va. to battle Virginia Wesleyan College at 1 p.m.

Sea Gull Volleyball Clipped by Marymount, 3-2
October 20, 2005

SALISBURY-MARYMOUNT COLLEGE GAME STATS
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury volleyball team began today’s game with hopes of clinching the number one seed in the CAC tournament, but those hopes were put in jeopardy when the Saints of Marymount University defeated the Sea Gulls in five hard fought games, 3-2. The loss drops the Sea Gulls to 4-2 in the conference and look up to Marymount University and Gallaudet University, both 5-1 in the conference at the completion of play this evening. 

Marymount and Salisbury split the first two games, with the Saints winning game one, 30-28 and the Sea Gulls winning game two, 30-17. Marymount also took game three, 30-28. 

In game four, the Sea Gulls took and early 14-10 lead until the Saints pulled to within one at 16-15. The game remained close late, as the Saints were able to tie the score, 24-24. Salisbury, however, was able to take the game 30-27, with the game point coming on a Saints’ service error.

In game five, Salisbury and Marymount traded points early, but the Saints were able to come out on top, 15-13. 

Senior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) and freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) led the Salisbury attack with 16 kills apiece. Senior captain Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) chipped in 13 kills and three service aces. Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) recorded 54 assists and 15 digs. Defensively, the team was led by freshman Jaime Marzocchi (Harrington, NJ/Old Tappan) who recorded 30 digs. Mister was second defensively with 24 digs. 

For the Saints, junior Gala Garcia led the team offensively with 17 kills, followed by senior Kelly Seymour with 11. Junior Beatrice Livioco contributed 61 assists to their attack. On defense, Seymour and senior Julia Ralston recorded 22 digs apiece. 

The team looks to regain momentum Wednesday, October 25, as they travel to St. Mary’s City, MD to take on conference opponent St. Mary’s College at 7:00 p.m. The team finishes up the regular season on Saturday, October 29 as they travel to Virginia Beach, VA to take on Virginia Wesleyan.

Salisbury Volleyball Rebounds Against Vassar, 3-1
October 18, 2005

SALISBURY-VASSAR COLLEGE GAME STATS
SALISBURY, Md. - After a difficult stretch that saw them lose three of five games last week, the Salisbury volleyball team rebounded tonight against Vassar College, defeating the Brewers 3-1.

In game one, the Brewers controlled the tempo and defeated the Sea Gulls, 30-25.  Vassar had runs of 8-3 to start and 9-8 to take a six point lead late in the game. Salisbury stormed back into the game, edging to within four points of the Brewers, but eventually fell short.

Salisbury kept the momentum in the second game and opened with a 9-6 run.  The Brewers were able to take the lead 18-16 following a 12-7 run. The Sea Gulls, however, overwhelmed Vassar with a 14-1 run to take the second game, 30-19.  In this contest, senior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) recorded her 1,000 career kill. She finished the evening with 15 kills, bringing her career total to 1,006.

In game three, Vassar again took the early lead, 4-0 and eventually led 15-12. Salisbury then took the lead on the strength of a 7-0 run led by freshman server Jaime Marzocchi (Harrington Park, NJ/Old Tappan). The Sea Gulls closed out this contest with an 11-10 run to win 30-25.

In the final game of the evening, the Sea Gulls and Brewers traded points, as Salisbury took an early 12-7 lead. The Sea Gulls then took control, going on a 4-0 run led by freshman server Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty). The Sea Gulls would extend the lead to 27-17, but would have to fend off a late 6-2 run by Vassar and server Julia Fiore. The Vassar run fell short, however, as the Sea Gulls finished off the Brewers, 30-24.

On the evening, senior captain Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) had 12 kills, two services aces, and 14 digs. Mister also added to her total kill attempts, as she recently passed Kara Kowalski (1998-01) on Salisbury’s career leaders. She has also moved into third place on Salisbury’s career kill leaders, passing Courtney Moore (1993-96).

Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) led the team with 41 assists and also contributed 16 digs. Petrecca’s effort tonight follows her performance against Colby College on Friday, when she recorded a triple double (12 kills, 31 assists, 15 digs). Sophomore Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) led the team with three services aces and also contributed eight kills. Marzocchi led the team defensively with 21 digs.

For Vassar, their offense was led by Lauren Glass, as she contributed on numerous occasions with key kills and serves. Anita Stavin led the Brewers defensively on the evening.

The Sea Gulls look to continue their momentum Thursday, as they host conference opponent Marymount at the Maggs Physical Activities Center. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

Sea Gulls See 13-match CAC Winning Streak Come to Halt, 3-0
October 12, 2005

SALISBURY-YORK COLLEGE GAME STATS
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference-leading Salisbury University volleyball team saw its six-match winning streak and 13-match match winning streak against league foes come to a screeching halt Wednesday night as the Sea Gulls (20-6, 4-1 CAC) dropped a 3-0 decision to York College in York. The Spartans snapped their two match losing streak with the win as they improved to 10-14 overall and 2-3 in the CAC.

The game scores were 30-25, 31-29, and 34-32.

Game one foreshadowed the entire evening as neither team was able to gain a sizable advantage in the match. The Spartans held a 26-20 lead but the Sea Gulls battled back to cut the lead to 27-25 but the Spartans ran off the final three points of the game to seal the game one win.

In the second game, Salisbury jumped out to an early 11-5 lead. The Spartans scored the next six points, tying the game for the first time. Salisbury responded with four straight points of their own as they led 15-11. The Spartans battled back to tie the game at 17, 18, and 19 before forging a 23-19 lead, their largest advantage of the game. The Sea Gulls tied the game for the sixth time at 23. The match would be tied again at 24, 25, 26, and the final tie at 29. Salisbury had an attack error to give the Spartans a 30-29 lead and then freshman Shannon Eberly ended the game with a kill, giving the hosts the 2-0 lead.

The Sea Gulls came out and rolled the Spartans to start game three. The Gulls had a quick 7-1 lead and eventually pushed their lead to a game-high seven points at 12-5. The Spartans chipped away at the lead but could not tie or take the lead until they tied the game at 22. That tie came in the middle of an 11-0 Spartan run that turned a 22-17 deficit into a 28-22 lead. Not a team to give up easily considering their history of dramatic comebacks in Lower Gym B, the Sea Gulls scored the next six points of the match to tie the game at 28. The game was tied at 29, 30, 31, and 32 before freshman Grace Acker stepped up and drilled two consecutive service aces to close out the match.

The win over the Gulls snaps the Spartans’ three match losing streak against Salisbury.

Salisbury’s offense was led by Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, Md./Calveret) as she had 13 kills while she also added 10 digs. Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, Md./Perry Hall) added 36 assists, 13 digs, five kills, and three service aces from her setter position. Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) collected a match-high 17 digs while she also had eight kills. Libero Jaime Marzocchi (Harrington Park, NJ/Old Tappan) recorded 10 digs for Salisbury. Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) contributed nine kills and six digs for Salisbury.

Senior Brandy Overlander and Acker each tied for the match-high in kills as they both banged out 13 for York. Overlander added two block assists and one service ace. Acker added the two huge service aces while she also recorded six digs and three assists as she continues to play very well for the Spartans.

Sophomore setter Katie Hertz handed out 36 assists while she also had 12 digs, five kills, and two service aces. Laura Flaugher led the Spartans’ defensive effort with 14 digs while Jess Smith and Jillian Zambori each aided the defensive cause with 10 digs.

The Sea Gulls will attempt to get back on the winning track Friday and Saturday when they participate in the McDaniel College Tournament.

Volleyball Sweeps to 20th Win of Season over Goucher
October 5, 2005

TOWSON, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball team saw it’s winning streak over Goucher stretched to 10 matches Wednesday when the Sea Gulls departed the Sports & Recreation Center with a sweep of a best-of-five match. The game scores were 30-10, 30-21, 30-12.

By winning, the Sea Gulls (20-5, 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference) reached 20 victories for the sixth time in head coach Margie Knight's nine-year tenure at Salisbury, including the last three straight. Abbey Petrecca contributed 34 assists to the win, plus she was credited with seven digs and nine kills.

Stacey Krebs supplied the defending CAC champions with seven kills. For the Gophers (3-19, 0-4 CAC), no player registered more than two kills.

Goucher's last victory over Salisbury was a 15-12, 11-15, 15-6, 15-9 triumph on Nov. 1, 1997.

Salisbury will be back in action next Wednesday, traveling to York College for a 7 p.m. match.

Petrecca Earns Conference Volleyball Player of the Week
October 5, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury junior setter Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) was named Capital Athletic Conference volleyball Player of the Week on Monday. She shares the award with Mary Washington’s Samantha Harper.

Petrecca led Sea Gulls volleyball to five wins last week, including a sweep of the Sea Gull Classic Tournament over the weekend. She had 34 assists and 22 digs in the win earlier in the week over Mary Washington. She was named tournament MVP over the weekend, as she posted 19 kills, 135 assists, 15 services aces, and 42 digs on the weekend. 

Harper led her school to a tournament victory in the Penny Fall Classic. She had 148 assists and 45 digs on the week. 

The Salisbury Volleyball travels to Baltimore, MD this week to take on conference opponent Goucher College. The game is set for Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Salisbury Volleyball Completes Tournament Sweep
October 1, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. – With their backs against the wall late in game four against Lebanon Valley College, the Sea Gulls used that wall for momentum, literally. Down 28-22 in the fourth game, Salisbury tracked down a ball near the wall some 40-feet away from the net and kept it in play, keying the rally. The Sea Gulls won that point and never looked back. They won the fourth game, 31-29, and pounded Lebanon Valley, 15-5, in the deciding fifth game. With this final Sea Gull Classic tournament win, Salisbury improved to 4-0 over two days of matches and clinched the first place honors. 

Tournament MVP Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) had 41 assists to go along with 15 digs and four blocks. Huge contributions from Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney), fellow all-tournament players, made the comeback possible. Krebs notched 13 kills, 21 digs, and seven assisted blocks while Lawson had 12 kills, 12 digs, and four assisted blocks.  

Earlier in the day, Salisbury prevailed over Stevens in three games (30-20,30-25,30-27). Krebs and Lawson again had stellar games. Krebs recorded 12 kills with only three errors while Lawson remained steady with six kills and only one error. Abbey Petrecca tallied 28 assists and four big service aces for the Sea Gulls. Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) chipped in with a solid 17 dig and three block performance. 

Salisbury improves its overall record to 19-5 with the four tournament wins. The Sea Gulls next game is a CAC match-up at Goucher College on Tuesday, October 4.

Salisbury Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Day One of Sea Gull Classic
September 30, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury volleyball team began the Sea Gull Classic on a high note Friday night, recording a 2-0 mark.  In the 4 p.m. tilt, the Sea Gulls defeated Villa Julie College, 3-0, with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26.  In the 8 p.m. match, the team defeated Williams College, 3-1, with scores of 30-25, 30-13, 26-30, and 30-28. 

In the afternoon game, the Sea Gulls were led offensively by senior Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) with 11 kills and two assists.  Defensively, Mister recorded eight digs.  Sophomore Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) recorded eight kills, followed by freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) who had five kills.  Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) recorded 27 assists, eight digs, three services aces, and two kills.

For Villa Julie, Jessica Bensley led the team in kills with 13, followed by Amy Sibiski and freshman Julie Hunter with eight apiece.  Katrina Loskam recorded 33 assists to lead that category for the Mustangs. 

In the nightcap, Krebs led the Sea Gulls with 16 kills, followed by senior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) with 11, and Mister and Cipollone with 10 apiece.  Petrecca recorded 42 assists, five services aces, and three kills.  Defensively, the Sea Gulls were paced by senior Allison Wine (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) with 19 digs, followed by Krebs with 16, and Mister and Petrecca with 11 apiece.

The 6 p.m. games included victories by Lebanon Valley, 3-1 (29-31, 30-28, 30-27, 30-27) over Williams, and Stevens, 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-19) over Ville Julie.  Lebanon Valley was led offensively by Natalie Goodfellow with 17 kills, followed by Margaret Prebula with 15 and Lexi Horstman with 12.  Cat Roth led the team in setting with 50 assists.  Defensively, the team was led by Katie Ferree with 22 digs, followed by Cat Roth with 13 and Brandi Roth with 10. 

In Steven’s victory over Villa Julie, the Ducks were led offensively by Melissa Rhode with 10 kills.  Micki Blitz recorded 26 assists, followed by Gina Joyce with 10.  Defensively, Rachel Ostroff recorded 15 digs, followed by Dawn Herring with 14. 

Sibiski led the Villa Julie offense with 16 kills.  Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Loskam and Julie Olsen with 12 digs apiece. 

In the second game at 8 p.m., Lebanon Valley defeated Stevens, 3-2, with scores of 23-30, 32-30, 28-30, 30-17, and 15-9.  Lebanon Valley was led to victory offensively by Goodfellow’s 16 kills and Horstman’s 13 kills.  Cat Roth recorded 48 assist and five service aces.  Defensively, they were led by Katie Ferree’s 22 digs and Brandi Roth’s 19 digs.

Stevens was led offensively by Herring with 18 kills, followed by Melanie Volk with 17 and Summer Hamilton with eight.  Defensivley, the Ducks were led by Herring’s 13 digs, followed by Volk’s 12 and Blitz’s 10, who also recorded 58 assists.  Jess Gardner recorded six kills, three assists and four blocks. 

After day one of the tournament, Salisbury and Lebanon Valley are tied atop the tournament, each with a 2-0 record, followed by Stevens with at 1-1 and Villa Julie and Williams each at 0-2.

Sea Gulls Start Slow, Overcome Mary Washington, 3-1

SALISBURY, Md. - On a night when Salisbury University senior Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) (pictured at left) was honored for her 1,000^th kill of her career, it was the Sea Gulls who thought they were going to get knocked off from the Capital Athletic Conference unbeatens. The University of Mary Washington Eagles (6-8, 0-2 CAC) recorded a hard-fought 30-16 victory in the opener before the Gulls  came back to win three straight, 30-23, 30-23, 30-28, to secure their third consecutive league win Wednesday night in the Maggs Physical Activities Center.

Mister was honored before the contest for not only picking up her 1,000^th kill earlier this month, but she also moved into third place in the career aces category and second place in career digs. She finished Wednesday’s game with seven kills, 23 digs and a solo block.

Salisbury (15-5, 3-0 CAC) tallied 43 kills in the game. Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) led the team with 14, while Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added 10.

In addition to Mister’s dig total, Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, Md./Perry Hall) added 22 and Allison Wine (Haggerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) and Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, Md./Liber) each posted 10.

SU’s Wine paced the team with five assisted blocks and Petrecca and Lawson had four apiece.

The Sea Gulls will return to action Friday and Saturday when they host the Sea Gull Classic Friday and Saturday. SU will face Villa Julie College Friday at 4 p.m. and Williams College at 8 p.m.

Sea Gulls Finish Salisbury Invitational with 2-2 Mark

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University rolled over Catholic in three games (30-22,30-28,30-26) in its first match on Saturday. The Sea Gulls got a big game from Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) who lead the team with 10 kills. Lawson also recorded nine digs and two blocks to help the Sea Gulls defensively. Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) chipped in with seven kills, two aces, and 11 digs. Senior captain Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) had a strong defensive game with 13 digs and a big solo block.

This second tournament win gave the Sea Gulls a 2-1 record going into the final match against Randolph-Macon in the afternoon tilt, 30-26, 18-30, 30-25, 27-30, 13-15). The tournament structure featured what could have been the championship match as its finale. If Salisbury were to defeat Randolph-Macon, the Sea Gulls could win the tournament holding the tiebreaker over Richard Stockton whom they defeated on Friday. 

In the tournament finale, a close volleyball match took place between Salisbury and Randolph-Macon. Salisbury got off to a two games to one advantage behind the stellar play of Mister. Randolph-Macon prevailed in the fourth game sending the match to the deciding fifth and final game. Tied at 13-13 in the fifth game, Salisbury committed a few late errors and Randolph-Macon capitalized to win the match. 

Mister lead the way for Salisbury with a team high 16 kills and 18 digs. Junior setter Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) tallied 44 assists and 16 digs, and Lawson along with Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) accounted for 12 and ten kills respectively. Petrecca, Mister, and Cipollone each had four blocks for the Sea Gulls.

Sea Gull Volleyball Finishes Day One of Invitational, 1-1
September 23, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball team (13-4) split their opening round in the SU Invitational on Friday Night. The team went the distance in the early game with Johns Hopkins, falling in five games, 3-2. In the night cap, the Sea Gulls defeated the Ospreys of Richard Stockton three games to one.

In the afternoon match, Salisbury played the Blue Jays of Hopkins tough, only to fall late. The team dropped the first two games with scores of 27-30 and 28-30. The Sea Gulls then tied the match at two games a piece with victories of 30-22 and 30-26. In a shortened match, the Sea Gulls feel to Johns Hopkins, 15-13.

Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) recorded 48 assists, three kills, two services aces, and 12 digs against the Blue Jays. Senior Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) added 14 kills and 25 digs, senior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) added nine kills and eight digs, senior Allison Wine (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) added 13 digs, and         freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) added 10 kills and 11 digs.

The Blue Jays were led by Katie O’Callaghan with 18 kills, Kim Jackanich with 15 kills and Jen Hajj with 14 kills. Lizzie Kay led the Jays in digs with 33. Amanda Lewis led in assists with 61 and services aces with two.

In the night cap, the Sea Gulls defeated Richard Stockton, 3-1 in four hard fought games. The Sea Gulls began the match with an 11-6 run, only to be outdone by an 11-2 run by the Ospreys. The Sea Gulls did regain command to take the first match, 31-29. Richard Stockton dominated the second match, winning convincingly 30-22. Early in the third and fourth games, the teams traded the lead several times. In game three, the game was tied 12-12 until the Sea Gulls pulled off an 18-5 run to take the contest 30-17. The Ospreys kept it close in the final game as well, until the Sea Gulls took the final game, 30-23.

The Sea Gull attack was led by Brittany Mister, who tallied 14 kills, and Lindsay Lawson, who recorded 13. Petrecca added 40 assists for the match. Defensively, Allison Wine contributed 17 digs, followed by Stacey Krebs with 15 and Mister with 14.

In the 6 p.m. matches, Richard Stockton defeated Randolph Macon, 3-2, while Johns Hopkins defeated Catholic, 3-0. In that game, Blue Jays player Jen Hajj eclipsed the 1,000 mark for career kills.

In the 8 p.m. match on court two, Randolph Macon defeated Catholic, 3-0.

After Friday night’s results, Johns Hopkins leads the tournament with a 2-0 mark, followed by Richard Stockton, Randolph Macon and Salisbury at 1-1. Catholic is fifth with a 0-2 mark.

The Salisbury University Volleyball Invitational continues Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. contest between Johns Hopkins and Richard Stockton in the Maggs gym. At 12 p.m., Salisbury takes on conference opponent Catholic on court one, while Johns Hopkins takes on Randolph Macon. At 2 p.m., Salisbury takes on Randolph Macon, while Richard Stockton takes on Catholic.

Salisbury Volleyball Finish 3-1 at Maryland Cup Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Salisbury Volleyball team posted a 3-1 mark on the weekend at the Maryland Cup Tournament in Baltimore.  They finished second to host Johns Hopkins, who finished 4-0 on the weekend. 

In game one Friday night, Salisbury defeated Villa Julie, 3-0, with victories of 30-14, 30-26, and 30-16.  Freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) recorded nine kills and freshman Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) recorded seven.  Seniors Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) and Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) each had 17 digs.  Junior Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) recorded 26 assists.

The Saturday morning game saw Johns Hopkins defeat Salisbury, 3-0, with scores of 30-26, 30-27, and 30-27.  Lawson recorded 10 kills, while Petrecca recorded 33 assists and 12 digs.

In the afternoon, Salisbury swept Frostburg state, 3-0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-16), and McDaniel 3-0 (30-13, 30-18, 30-26).  Against Frostburg, Cipollone and Mister recorded seven kills apiece, while Petrecca recorded 38 assists.  Against McDaniel, Lawson recorded eight kills and Petrecca recorded 20 assists and 11 digs.

Sea Gull Volleyball Team Takes CAC Opener over Catholic, 3-1

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University’s initial Capital Athletic Conference volleyball match was anything but a thing of beauty for the Sea Gulls, but it was a win nonetheless as Salisbury ran its current winning streak to five matches Tuesday night with a 32-30, 30-21, 20-30, 30-18 win over Catholic University of America in the Maggs Physical Activities Center.

Catholic, which entered the match with a 1-7 record, played anything but like a team with a .143 winning percentage. The Cardinals led 7-0 and 18-9 during the opening game. CUA was on the brink of winning - leading 29-24 - but Salisbury rallied to capture game one, 32-30.

Neither team took control of the second game early, with Salisbury eventually pulling out to a 25-16 lead before taking control of the match, 30-24. But Catholic (1-8, 0-1 CAC) rallied to take an 11-0 lead before cruising to a 30-20 win in game three.

The final game of the match was tied 9-9 and Salisbury (8-2, 1-0 CAC) trailed 10-9 before going on a 14-4 spurt to put the game out of reach, taking the deciding game.

Junior setter Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, Md./Perry Hall) led the Sea Gull charge with 35 assists, 20 digs, three assisted blocks and seven kills. Senior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) chipped in nine kills, five assists, 17 digs and two assisted blocks and freshman Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) finished with 13 kills, eight digs and five assisted blocks. Senior captain Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert)  had 11 kills and 13 digs and sophomore outside hitter Lynn Cipollone (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had 10 kills and eight digs.

Catholic was led by Emily McGlynn’s (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) 32 assists, five kills, 16 digs and three assisted blocks. Mary McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) added 11 kills and 26 digs, Whitney Dachelet (Anniston, Ala./Donoho) had 18 digs and 12 kills, but it was not enough for the Cardinals.

Salisbury will return to action Friday and Saturday when the Sea Gulls take part in the Maryland Cup in Baltimore. The next home action for the Sea Gulls will be Sept. 23-24 when they host the Salisbury Invitational.

Mister Named All-Tournament; Gulls Take Blue Bracket

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Salisbury University’s Brittany Mister (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) was named to the All-Tournament team Saturday as the Sea Gulls posted a 4-1 mark to win the Blue Bracket at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic Saturday.

The Sea Gulls (7-2) dropped an opening-round match to George Fox, 3-1, on Friday. After opening with a 30-20 win, the Gulls dropped consecutive games, 20-30, 26-30, 29-31. Salisbury then defeated Washington College, 3-1 (27-30, 30-16, 30-21, 30-26).

SU continued its winning ways on Saturday, knocking off University of Scranton, 3-0 (30-22, 30-13, 30-20), before defeating Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet, 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-21) and then capturing the bracket with a 3-1 win over Moravian (30-32, 30-21, 30-20, 30-24).

In the triumph over Scranton, Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) and Mister each had 11 kills. Mister also recorded three service aces and Stacey Krebs (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) tallied seven assisted blocks.

In the Moravian win, Mister recorded 14 digs, while Krebs added two solo and four assisted blocks. Krebs also had 11 kills in 20 attempts.

Salisbury will be at home for the first time this season on Tuesday when the Sea Gulls open CAC action against Catholic University at 7 p.m.
