Honored With Four All Americans
May 31, 2006
SALISBURY, MD - The IWLCA
honored 48 student athletes on the 2006 Women’s Lacrosse All-American teams, and
Salisbury was well-represented with four selections. Senior attacker Kate
Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) received first team honors. Scott’s 90
points led all Sea Gulls in scoring, and her 50 assists were sixth nationally.
She was an integral part of the outstanding Salisbury offense that scored 15.84
goals a game, third-best in Division III.
Senior goalie Ali
Goetz (Fallston, MD/Fallston), senior midfielder Erin McCarthy
(Gaithersburg, MD/Holy Cross), and senior defender Sarah Davis (Arnold,
MD/Broadneck) were all named to the second team All-America.
Davis and Goetz were
two of the key ingredients to the Sea Gulls defense which finished second in the
nation in scoring defense. Goetz’s 4.96 goals against average ranked second in
the nation as she finished the year saving just under 60% of the shots she
faced. She denied the opposition from every angle, finishing with 129 saves and
six forced turnovers. Davis finished the season second on the team in ground
balls with 52 and caused 17 turnovers. She was vital in the Salisbury transition
from defense to offense, committing only three turnovers the entire season.
McCarthy’s scoring
talent was tough for opponents to handle as she led the Sea Gulls in goals with
42. McCarthy finished her career tied for seventh on Salisbury’s all-time goals
list. She was also active outside the eight-meter, scooping 38 groundballs and
controlling 31 draws.
The IWLCA and US
Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 10,

Lions of TCNJ Eliminate
Sea Gulls in Regional Championship, 6-5
May 14, 2006
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury
women’s lacrosse season ended on Sunday afternoon as the team fell in defeat,
6-5, at the hands of the Lions of the College of New Jersey in the NCAA Division
III Women’s Lacrosse Regional Championship game. It was the third time in the
past three tries that the Lions have defeated the Sea Gulls. Senior Amanda
Tack (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) recorded four points on the afternoon,
chipping in a goal and three assists in the loss.
The Lions opened the scoring at the 27:47 mark, as senior midfielder Lauren
Dougher (Blue Bell, PA/Mt. St. Joseph’s) scored an unassisted goal. Salisbury
would answer with three straight goals, with Katie Simmons (Silver Spring,
MD/Springbrook) scoring at the 21:18 mark with the assist to Tack; Ani
Khatchatoorian (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwest) scoring at the 20:04 mark; and
Sue Ackermann (Skyesville, MD/Liberty) scoring at the 13:33 mark with
Tack recording her second assist.
Lions’ sophomore midfielder Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan
Regional) would cut the Sea Gull lead to one, 3-2, converting a free position
attempt at the 12:22 mark before Tack scored her lone goal of game off a pass
from Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) at the 6:29 mark to give
Salisbury the lead at halftime, 4-2.
In the second half, the Lions dominated the Sea Gulls, scoring four goals to
Salisbury’s one. Doane chipped in another goal at the 26:14 mark, converting her
second free position shot of the game. Senior midfielder Bridget Bigley (Cherry
Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) would then tie the game at four as she took a pass
from Dougher at the 16:46 mark.
Salisbury would briefly take the lead again as Erin McCarthy (Gaithersburg,
MD/Holy Cross) scored off of Tack’s fourth assist at the 11:01 mark, but Bigley
would tie it again fifty-three seconds later with an unassisted score. Lions’
freshman Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) would score the
deciding goal on a free position attempt at the 5:43 mark to seal the victory
for the Lions.
The Sea Gulls had two goals wiped away in the second half, as freshman
midfielder Holly Johnson (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) appeared to
score, but it was disallowed by a dangerous shot call. Ackermann appeared to
score her second of the game as well, but that goal was disallowed because of a
crease violation.
Salisbury goalie Ali Goetz (Fallston, MD/Fallston) stopped eight of
fourteen shots on goal, but suffered just her second loss of the season. Senior
goalie Megan Marquardt (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) stopped twelve of
seventeen shots on goal to earn the win for the Lions.
Salisbury held slight advantages in shots, 22-18, and ground balls, 23-13, while
the Lions had the advantage in draw controls, 7-6. The free position attempts
pushed the Lions to victory, converting three of four attempts, while Salisbury
failed to convert on their lone attempt.
The Lions (13-2) will now take on the winner of Middlebury (15-1) and Bowdoin
(15-4) on Saturday, May 20, at DeBaun Field on the campus of the Stevens

Salisbury Looks for Another
Shot at the National Title
February 8, 2006
2006 ROSTER | 2006
SCHEDULE | 2005 FINAL STATISTICS
SALISBURY, Md. – The 2005 Salisbury women’s lacrosse team did just about
everything you can hope for from a team in one season. The Sea Gulls had six
players receive all-conference awards, including the Coach of the Year, Jim
Nestor (5th season as Head Coach), and the Capital Athletic
Conference player-of- the-year Linda Ackermann. Salisbury had two first-team
All-American selections, Lynsey Bateman and Ackerman, and also had a
third-team All-American selection, Sarah Davis (Arnold, MD/Broadneck). In
addition to all of the individual accolades, the Gulls also reached the school’s
first number one ranking and also defeated The College of New Jersey for the
first time in school history. SU compiled 17 wins, which is also a school
record, and finished the season ranked second and the national runner up.
With all of the success last
season, the 2006 Sea Gulls are poised and ready to make another run at the
national title. “Our main goal is to take care of the small things and if we can
do that, the big things will fall into place,” said Nestor.
SU has four players that are
rated as pre-season All-Americans according to Inside Lax Magazine.
Senior Mary Bateman (Sparks, MD/Hereford) and Davis were selected
as first-team All-Americans, while Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck)
and Jessica Froats (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) earned third team
honors.
Davis, a senior defender, will
be one of the anchors alongside goalie Ali Goetz (Fallston, MD/Fallston),
who had only a 6.37 goal against average last season, and senior Katy Funk
(White Hall, MD/Hereford) who was a first-team All-CAC player. This
experienced defense will also be joined by sophomore Kelly Phillips
(Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) and senior Lauren Sacchetti (Glen Burnie,
MD/Old Mill). Salisbury rotates several players on defense and Nestor
expects Phillips and Sacchetti to make a big impact for the Gulls.
On the offensive side of the
field, Salisbury has two big voids to fill with the graduation of Ackermann and
Bateman. Although the Gulls were ranked number one in the nation in scoring
offense last season, Nestor isn’t too worried about the ranking this season. “As
long as we score one more goal than the other team at the end of the game, I’ll
be happy,” said Nestor.
Salisbury does return Scott,
who was the leader in total points for the Sea Gulls last year with 72 (39 goals
and 33 assists). SU also brings back senior Amanda Tack (Ellicott City,
MD/River Hill) and senior Erin McCarthy (Gaithersburg, MD/Holy Cross)
who scored 24 and 33 goals each respectively. With the loss of Bateman and
Ackermann Nestor expects several players to step up and fill these positions.
Nestor will look to Natalie Degele (14 goals) (Ellicott City,
MD/Centennial) and Liz Funk (14 goals) (Millersville, MD/Severna
Park) on attack. In the midfield, Ani Khatchatoorian (Gaithersburg,
MD/Northwest), Katie Simmons (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook), and
Sue Ackermann (Sykesville MD/Liberty), who scored a combined 40 goals for
the Gulls last season, will look to take control.
The 2006 Sea Gulls
have a lot of experience and according to coach Nestor the Gulls know the
determination and hard work it takes to make another run at the national title.
Salisbury has adopted the team slogan, “Revenge in ’06,” and they will get their
opportunity at revenge on April 15th, when they travel to Ewing, New
Jersey to play the defending national champions, The College of New Jersey
Lions.
