Salisbury 15, St. Mary’s 8
Women’s College Lacrosse
Capital Athletic Conference Championship Game
Sunday, April 25, 2004

Box Score
Salisbury, Md - Junior midfielder Linda Ackermann scored three goals and five other Sea Gulls scored twice each as #4 ranked Salisbury defeated #7 St. Mary’s 15-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference’s Championship Game Sunday. Salisbury (12-2) extended its winning streak to seven games while claiming its second straight CAC title and fourth in five years.

Trailing 6-4 late in the first half, Salisbury used an 8-0 run overlapping the two halves to seize control. The Gulls scored three times in the final 1:33 of the first half, including a go-ahead goal by sophomore Lynsey Bateman (2g) with two seconds remaining, to take a 7-6 halftime lead.

SU then tallied the first five markers of the second half to build its lead to 12-6 with 14:13 remaining. Sophomore Erin McCarthy (2g-1a) started the second half scoring and sophomore Liz Funk (1g-1a) capped the run, with Ackermann, Sarah Slafkosky and Jessica Wirth (2g) also adding goals.

St. Mary’s (11-4) ended its 20-minute drought and the Salisbury run when senior Carol Schmoeller (3g-1a) scored at 14:40 to pull the Seahawks to within 12-7.  McCarthy then answered for Salisbury two minutes later on a free position goal to extend the lead back to six goals.

Sophomore Mary Bateman (2g-2a), pictured, and senior Jessica White (2g-1a) also scored twice each for the Sea Gulls, who outshot St. Mary's 46-22. Sophomore goalie Ali Goetz finished with 10 saves for the Gulls. Schmoeller paced the St. Mary's offense with three goals, while Sarah Sloane added two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Jen Chumley recorded 15 saves for the Seahawks.

Salisbury concludes its regular season with non-conference home games against Washington and Rowan this week before beginning play in next month’s NCAA Championship Tournament.  Since the CAC champion does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Sea Gulls hope to receive an at-large bid and make their fifth NCAA appearance in six years.
